Sport edition??

I was perusing ebay and noticed this old mag for sale. Did Yam make a 'sport' edition? It is a standard, black out engine and pipes, drilled rotors, and that is just what I can see...

To my knowledge Yamaha did not make a "sport" version of the 11. Not that was available as a standard model in the north American market. I followed the model for a several years after buying my 78 version and saw nothing and heard nothing about such a version. Perhaps the article is about "sport" bikes and back then the XS11 was considered a sport bike. The pic on the cover is a KOW, not a Yamaha. I can tell by the spokes on the wheels and the shape of the tank and color treatment.

The red bike to the right is a GPz 1100 Kawasaki. But the cover does mention an XS 11 Sport. I think those were only in Europe tho.

As Commando eluded to, the 1.1 sport model was a UK version. Note the seller is in GB!!

Yes the 1.1 was a "sport" bike and was labeled and sold as a 1.1 The cover story on that mag should have listed it as a 1.1 and not an XS1100 because they are different models.

5K7

The Sport Edition is the European 5K7, also known as XS 1100 S and was built from 1980 until 1982. Was meant to give collapsing sales a boost by competing with sportier bikes.......
Large headlamp a la SR500 , cowling, stiffened frame etc.

Hey Mathh,

Thanks for the links, why that 1.1 Sport is merely an 81MNS with cowling/fairing and flatter seat!! Do you have any specifics on the FRAME stiffening, where and what they did to it, like location of extra braces welded to frame, etc.!?

Try this link TC. It's not the 1.1 but is a custom frame on a custom bike. You can see in the serious of PICs how the frame is different. Hope the link works.. Dam link dose not go to the pics but check out the photo section / projects and you will find a set of PICS of a frame and Turbo setup.

Hey Rob,

That's not much of a stock XS11 anymore!! Different swingarm, fancy pipes, etc.!! I couldn't see much difference than the stock frame gussets on it, it actually didn't have the extra plate material around the down and cross tubes at the steering neck, all naked!! Pretty and shiny though!

The triangulation under the tank is different along with the drop downs from the upper tubes to the front down tubes. There is also an added tube across the upper front where the exhaust goes on but your right there isn't a lot of gusseting on it. I think their key to the strength they expect to gain in the front end is in the differences seen in the upper front end.

Great Link ... Thanks. I will guess that the air box for that bike is shorter front to back so it will fit in that space? Or is that plate "formed" to allow for the air box that is currently used? It must be a real tight fit for carb re & re.
