Most of there attitudes suffer from “looking through the key hole syndrom”.
Australia’s population is about the same as USA’s “illegal” population
or about 6.5 percent of citizens.
The US is the most “diverse” country in the world. Period.....We even have a few Aussies that have come to visit and have never gone home.
I’ve traveled and lived from Alaska to Southern CA., and along the southern US out to Florida.
Have only spent a small amount of time in the north eastern US and there are at least 15 states I’ve never been to or through. Have also been to a few other countries but not to Australia.
I like to visit web sites in other countries now and then. The perception of the US varies but most are similar (if not worse) than the Aussie attitude. Sometimes get to log on to there sites and I use a translating program to post. Has provided some very interesting (and funny) entertainment for me.
Hmmm---enlightening. After reading this thread I now understand why pggg is a bit obnoxius.
I can only assume ALL Kiwi's are as full of venom for the US.
Most of the world is full of venom for the US. We're cool when we're helping but we just never go away after we're done helping and we try to make everyone be like us.

That's non-sense. We are cool when we are helping?
Here's what we ought to do to the ingrates...leave them to their own devices. Let the ungrateful bass-turds fend for themselves! When there is some disaster...or people starving...or dire disease...or war or famine or pestilence or earthquakes...SCREW EM!
I am so sick of my tax dollars being pissed off to the tune of billions in foreign aid only to be "spat upon" by the very people we try to help.
They hate us if we help them and they'll hate us if we we don't. So why in the name of logic would we PAY for people to hate us? Why pay to have people spit on us?
We are the most benevolent nation ever to grace the surface of this planet. Yet we are the most hated. Go figure.
PLEASE don't give me the French line about how we should give even more...how we don't give as big a percentage of our GNP as other nations. The fact is we give more than anyone else ...almost by an order of magnitude.
I suppose you are one of those people that think we should give billions in foreign aid with no strings attached?
From Maxxy boy - "I can only assume ALL Kiwi's are as full of venom for the US." WROOONNNGGGG!!! Come down here for a visit fella, you might just change ya mind.
BTW mro, NZ and OZ are both in 'Australasia' but are two TOTALLY DIFFERENT countries, but Oz always claim the 'good bits' as their own
NZ gun laws are more relaxed than in Oz, still pretty strict though, myself, I've got a .270, .308, .243, 6.5mm, 303's, .22's among others, but pointing at humans(even if they are scum) - is a big no-no. Renewing a gun licence, one of the questions asked by the cops is "Would you use your firearms on an intruder?" If you say "YES" - then you'd be kissing your licence and all your firearms goodbye. But in the real world if it's 'you or them' I wouldn't hesitate..

Thing about guns here (second amendment) is that citizens are allowed guns for the purpose of defending themselves as a last resort against our government.
People seem to forget we had just fought a war of independence. Our leaders at that time wanted a means for the people to reclaim there country if necessary. They wanted a government for the people, by the people, not exactly what we have now, but no dictators or Kings either. Will not happen in my life time but can see a possible future of a civil war here. Too many people have become disillusioned with our "elected" officials (different can of worms there, but related). Some don't vote because there uninformed and too lazy, but many more have given up in disgust.

sorry to hijack such a thread.
main part of the problem is the lack of common sense laws which allow good citizens to become victims w/o recourse and then our government may portray them as the bad guys.
My opinion on why people around the world dislike Americans is this. We, as a nation, realize that we are lucky to live here and have the freedoms we do, despite the ridiculousness that attempts to chip away at those freedoms.
But in knowing that, many people take it farther and come to believe that we are the greatest nation ever, in all respects. As America is made up of so many of these individuals, America itself is viewed as having that attitude. Therefore we're seen as thinking we know what's best for other nations/other people and we're trying to force them to be like us, like Pat said.
I don't think we (America) should cease to help out those in need, but I do think we should butt out of a whole lot of stuff in the world. Let people live like they think they ought to live, as long as it doesn't infringe on anyone else's human rights. I like that we stand up for those who can't stand up for themselves, but when we take it further and try to "convert the heathens", that's when we need to butt out.
This thread sort of went off on a tangent from Dan's original post (I do like discussions with differing points of view), but I hope he can forgive it. Dan, do what you gotta do. If any of us can be of any help, let us know. And keep us up to date on how it's going.

That is patently absurd. But then what else would one expect? This is exactly what you get when the people implement a socialist-statist form of government. When the people expect "daddy" government to provide them with everything including a 24 hour guard a their front door. Of course that is absurd as well since no government can protect all the people all the time. Makes mee head hurt.
Here we have a prime example of why TJ (Thomas Jefferson) was adamant about amending the newly composed Constitution in order to ABSOLUTELY insure the right of the poeple to not only bear arms BUT USE THEM!
So in NZ if someone breaks into your home and threatens you with life or limb I suppose you are to lay back and let them slit your throat?!?!
PGGG ...you say in the real world you wouldn't hesistate...but apparently in the "real world of NZ" you'd loose your weapons and likely your freedom as you would go to jail for simply defending your own life.
I need some tylenol...better yet I need some AlkaSletzer...

AND THE CROWD ROARS!!!
Thank you "RO" for providing the facts. I believe it was TJ that said in a letter to the early Continental Congress...'The right of the people to keep and bear arms is imperative so that they may have re-course against tyrrany..."
Self defense is a very secondary reason for the right to bear weapons in the USA. The main reason according to the biggest advocate of teh 2nd amendment was "killing tyrrants".

The problem with this "no strings aid" is that you'd be funding your enemies.
It sounds like you are saying if Iran ( a sworn enemy of the US and they have stated themselves so boldly) is hit with a Richter 9 we should just send Mr. "Act My Denny Jihad" a check for 300 million with no conditions?
Do you think he would actually use it to help his own people rebuild business and houses and lives? No he'd use it to develop more weapons and fund even more human rights abuses.
I'm all for letting people live the way they choose. If they choose tyrrany then let 'em have it. Just don't make me pay (via taxes) to propel their stupidity of living beneath the boot of a tyrrant even under the guise of "AID".
If a big earthquake did hit Iran (or any other country so vocally against us), I don't think they would ask the US for aid. They would ask other countries with similar attitudes toward America. They might ask the UN for aid, and it would be up to the whole body to decide what to do. The US has a vote and the option to add aid to it or not.
By no means would I ever advocate writing a big, no-strings check to the government (that has denounced the US as loudly as has Iran) of a nation who is in need. Instead, if the decision is made to help whatever nation, use the money to fund humanitarian goals such as food and clean water; the basic needs.
As for those living under tyranny, they oftentimes don't have an option to leave. It's the rare situation when they do (have the option). It's like the neighborhood bully who's cornered the skinny kid. The skinny kid isn't choosing to stay there and get beat up, he has no choice. If you were the skinny kid, wouldn't you want a passerby to help you out?
That's where I'm coming from with aid. I know that tyrants will use money to fund their own end (that's why we shouldn't give it to them). Rather, aid should be given directly to those in need in such a way as to minimize that possibility. I know that's easier said than done, but there are ways.

At last! We agree on something! If Joe Blow homeowner shoots some piece of scum breaking in and threatening him with a knife, gun, baseball bat, whatever, - it's Joe Blow who ends up on charges!! Absolute politically correct Bull sh*T!! The government down here are a snivelling, greasy pack of weasels, and MOST Kiwis will tell you the same.
