  • Can I have your tongue?

I thought I'd get you to reading this.
What I'm doing is rebuilding my SF seat base. It's a plastic base but the metal tongue that slides under the fuel tank is missing. It's normaly riveted or bolted to the seat base. Has anyone got one that I can buy off them? Or know where I can get one? It's just the tongue I'm after not the whole base.

    Cheers in antisipation

The one that came on my Diamond seat was just a piece of thick plastic. Only functionn is to keep the front of the seat down; if you can't find an OEM replacement something suitable could be built fairly easily.

      Hey Al,

That sounds like you have an aftermarket seat to begin with. All of the seats on the XS's were Metal AFAIK!? When I got a replacement bucket/seat for mine that had rusted, it didn't come with the tongue. IIRC, I had to cut mine off of my old pan, and drill holes in it to bolt it to the new Fiberglass seat bucket/bottom!

Like Jerry said, you can probably fashion one out of some simple metal plate from your local building supply store!

Thanks to you both for your reply and suggestions. If I make one myself I will need the dimentions because as I've said I have nothing to go on. So if any member has the measurments I will be truely greatfull.

I've been mixing and matching seats and tanks for a while now on my 79 Special. My current configuration is an 80 Special seat with an 81 Standard tank.

I initially managed to get the tongue to fit but it was such a pain I quit worrying about it. As long as it wasn't contacting any wiring etc and I had both rear mounting bolts tighe it worked fine.

Checked a seat, the tongue is about 1.5" wide, you can verify this with the SLOT under the tank! It's 1" deep back to front where it bends up away from the seat, and has about a 1/2" rise, the rest is just attached to the seat base, you can adjust that to the size of your pan, location of mounting holes, etc.! The rise of the tongue occurs right where the front slope of the seat meets the bottom flat part!

                Safety first

                Hi Ardvark,
be sure and get the front end of that seat properly secured. I heard of a biker who relied on the seat rear fasteners and was
in a crash. The seat rose up, trapped his reproductor under itself and then crushed it as his full weight came down on the seat again to qualify him for a Darwin Award.
An urban legend perhaps but would you bet your gonads on it?

I have an old damaged pan for a 79SF that I could cut the tongue from, and you could trim it as needed. Just cover the cost of shipping, and a couple of beers, and it's yours. PM me with your mailing address. I have a Paypal account if you'd like to use that for the shipping cost.

                    Merry Christmas.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my thread. Based on info I've gained from this forum and the one over here in the UK I have the dimentions and a chap at work made me one. Thank you all again. Be sure I'll post another question as I carry on restoring me bike.
