Say Ed, Did you post that the American Revolution was an "unfortunate twist of fate"? I might have missed something there. PGGG, do all in NZ speak the Kings English? Are there other words that are completely different from the American forms?

Here's my opinion on the subject... Peoples' perceptions are based on what they themselves know/do and they compare that to what others do.

Text messaging on phones takes time, so things are abbreviated as much as possible. This form of communication makes its way into other written mediums. However, since I'm not used to texting, it takes extra effort on my part to decipher what is being said.

The same thing applies to the use of acronyms. DAMHIK = don't ask me how I know, PITA = pain in the @$$, IIRC = If I recall correctly, etc... Until I learned this form of communication, I was incredibly lost. (For the longest time I thought IIRC was a carb designation: Roman numeral II with extra letters... but that's a different story.)

Furthermore (farthermore?? ), carburators have been shortened to carbs. The name Jeep comes from the army (?) in WWII referring to 'General Purpose' vehicles as GP vehicles, pronounced as the name is today. These are widely accepted names, but abbreviations nonetheless.

So I think it comes down to the reader's level of comfort concerning any particular form of communication. I, personally, take a bit of pride in using punctuation and capitalizing appropriately. I think it exhibits a degree of care put into the effort. It makes it easier for the reader to understand -and isn't that what the reason for communication is in the first place?

There was a post by someone a while ago that had absolutely no capitalization or punctuation and plenty of sentence abbreviations. I hadn't the slightest idea what they were asking, and just gave up trying to figure it out. Because their communication was so foreign to anything I could understand, they might have missed out on something I could have been able to help them with. It's all about communication.

I hate abbreviations, text messages on phones, and arrogance. And I don't care if you can, or cannot, spell. As I mentioned earlier, I think, therefore I can usually figure it out.

A few variations here and there but do speak english and can't care less about the king.

Interesting, I was of the understanding most of NZ heritage was based on scottish ancestry. Hence the rolling of the rrrrr's in kiwi speak.

And where does Kings English come from. I thought it was always referred to as Queens english??????? King Who??? Lets face it, Most kings of the past had very little to offer in the way good language.

Careful lads, I implied nothing about the American Revolution: you inferred! No,I was thinking of the Battle of Killouden, (spelled phonetically, since spell check doesn't seem to work for Scottish battles!) This was one of many turning points in Western history. But I'm really curious how anyone would think I was thinking of the American Revolution!

House of Stuart... My neighbor, Douglas Stuart, claims some Scottish nobility or some such rot. The only noble Scottish tradition he seems to follow is up-ending a bottle and collecting abandoned cars in his yard.

No... can't think of any pivotal battles that would have drastically altered the English language. (At least here in the states) Scottish control would have only been localized, at best.
Now, on the other hand, English battles with France or Spain could have done some damage. Not that the English language would have changed, but her rule of the seas and trade routes would have suffered, allowing other seafaring countries to colonize the New World to a greater degree which would have had a more direct impact.

If we hop on the ol' time machine and go back to Scotland in the early 14th century... we find King Robert the Bruce kicking butt and taking names in the Battle of Bannockburn. Though on Scottish soil... it makes me wonder what would have happened had they carried their skirmish to England...

It seems to me that the more pivotal battles between England and Scotland were fought before the US was even a glimmer in the wallet of the Europeans. No matter when these battles were fought... any MAJOR win for Scotland would have influenced our language had they been able (or had the inclination) to defeat England on England's turf. I think their best bet would have been with Robert the Bruce as he had the motivation and the cunning... but he was only trying to keep Scotland from being overrun by English tax collectors and tourists.

Please feel free to correct me anywhere here...
