  • Painted Fenders

I have always been a fan of Chrome, the more the merrier, I alway figured. Lately, I have been thinking about painting the fenders when I paint the bike. Has anybody else done this? What do you folks think of it? My virago had painted fenders and it looked great, but again, I am a fan of chrome too. I think it would help carry the theme of the bike better if they were painted. I am torn, your opinions are appreciated.

Paint your fenders, wagon, anything else you want!

        Hey TomKat,

My machine's chrome was less than desirable as well, so I put some paint on them. I didn't prep them like I should have, was in a hurry. But I do like the additional amount of color it gives to the bike.

So, do I need to remove the chrome, or just rough it up first?

I also painted because of the chrome being in bad condition

rough it up with 400 grit
prime it heavy, then sand it smooth going up to 600 grit
then put the color to it

Just to add to the confusion, powder coating is available in many color options. If fact, I've recently found out that the midnights fenders are coated, not black chrome. The're in for recoating as I write. But it's a few bucks more than a rattle can job. If it were me, I'd blast off all the chrome and prime & paint to match the tank. If I could find a matching, or blending color, powder coating would certainly be more durable.

My 'F' had terrible chrome and even some ents. I purchased a DYI powdercoat gun from Eastwood, roughed the chrome up with 400 grit and powdered away. I have over 40K miles on it with out a single chip.

                  sand blast

i used to work at a body shop ,i used there sand blaster to rough up the chrome, then a rattle can self etching primer then regular primer ,wet sand with 400-600 grit then paint followed by wet sanding and buffing. but thats me.

                    Ohhhhhh... shiny

I like chrome but as has already been mentioned... if it's not in the best shape... I paint it.

Also depends on personal preference... and paint scheme... some paint schemes say "paint the chrome" and other schemes say "don't touch it".

I found a guy in school for paint and body to paint my tank, fenders, and side covers for a grade in his class. He told me he gave the chrome a light sanding first. I chose to go ahead and have him paint it as it was all scratched up and looking rough.

(you can see the ghost flames in the tank if you look closely!)

I plan on painting mine...I'm trying to go for the whole "blacked out" look. Gonna take me awhile to get there though...at least I know it will stay running for however long it takes...and then some!

I'll eventually be repainting both my XS's.
Of course the MNS will have the black fenders.
The E ............ I have some ideas about a paint scheme that will entail painting one (front) or both fenders. I will XSperiment with the large standard tank as to if it will look stupid or not.
