Mercury can be picked up with a magnet, if you have to get it out of a crack in the floor.
Don't know why this surprised me, but I was momentarily amazed while syncing the carbs. Had the stix hanging next to the alternator cover when it sucked the mercury reservoir right up to the engine case.
