  • riding pants

So the risks thread got me thinking. I've been meaning to get a pair of riding pants for a number of years (ordered a pair once but they were backordered for months so I canceled it) but just haven't gotten them and have made due with jeans.

Anyone have any suggestions for good riding pants that would fit over my jeans and be comfortable in the summer? What works for you?

    Thanks,
    Clark

I use the First Gear mesh pants. They have a zip out liner, knee pads, and pockets for hip pads. I wore them in the heat this past summer (118) with shorts on underneath, and was cool for the most part. I've used them for two years now, and I've been happy with them. I also have the mesh jacket to go with them.

I'm with DiverRay, not sure of the model but I have First Gear pants that match my Kilimanjaro jacket, heavy ballistic fabric, padding in all the right places and their waterproof, I even wear them motocrossing, on really hot days I wear shorts underneath. Mine don't have a liner though. Can't remember what I paid.

        pants

was surfing and looking at some mesh britches. oddly enough out of 51 different styles. i found 1 pair offered in a size over 42-44. not sure about some but i haven't seen the inside of a 42 since oh about the 9th grade. every leather item i've ever owned has run super small. does mesh act the same waY? maybe its my calling to open a tall and fat ride gear store.

          Tall & Fat

I've got a 36" inseam. I haven't seen any motorcycle pants that long, especially with 36" waist.

I have several pairs. Leather with armour for cool to cold days (teknic)...then I have some Fieldsheer mesh with armor. they are very nice on even hot days. I also have a pair of Mossi ballistic nylon overpants with armor in the hips and knees. They go over my jeans and are good for cool to cold weather but not for warm days.

All these pants were about 100 to 150 and will be worth ever penny if I ever go down...(ooooops..I have gone down) ...an boy was I glad I had it on.

I wear Joe Rocket "Phoenix" mesh pants and jacket.
I consider this my "armor layer".
As needed I add layers under this for warmth and layers over it for water/wind layer.
I ride all winter and a windbreaker over the Phoenix jacket keeps me very warm. Wind resistance that leaves 1-2 inches of still airspace underneath works quite well.
The mesh pants have armor on the knees and padding in th hips/butt area. The panst are actually cooler (temp-wise) in summer than jeans alone. The holes in the mesh direct air under the material and along your legs. One way to get even cooler is to wear bicycling shorts or tights under the mesh.
One thing abut anything you wear is the fit. If it is loose then you'll get abrasions inside the gear if it slides over your skin.

                Thanks for all the input.

I know da wife will only allow me one pair so I think I'll go with a summer weight. I think I'll go with the Joe Rocket Phoenix pants in a size too large. I wear a Joe Rocket Ballistic jacket so it should zip together fine.

I use Pat's type of riding gear. I find this to be the best setup I have ever ridden with. Its light, its comfortable and it is all season.

Riding in hot weather has always been a problem for me. I would end up in a jeans and cotton shirt, with my expensive protective gear bungied on the back.

Now I have my protection on all the time and layer up for warmth. I find a typical motorcycle light weight rain gear work perfect down into the 50F. I find sweats on under the rain gear keeps me warm down to freezing.

A huge plus is that the over gear stows into a very small space. My tank pack holds my 4 season riding gear all the time.
