  • Problems setting carbs on 1100?

I am trying to set the carbs on my 79 XS1100 standard and #3 is really high on the gauge? I know you set your other carbs to meet #3 and I know it is not adjustable...why is it so high on the sync gauge? I don't care where I set the others it won't even come close help!!!

there shouldn't be any leaks because I coated the boots and put gasket sealer on the matting surface and 3 and 4 won't even get close??? 3 is on the top of gauge

        "Something's screwy."

actually, you're not setting the other carbs to #3.
        There are only three screws.
First synchronize carbs #1 and #2 by the screw between them. Then synchronize carbs#3 and #4 by the screw between them.
Finally, using the middle screw, you will be synchronizing the left bank(1+2) to the right bank(3+4)
        easy.

#3 and I know it is not adjustable...
.. #3 is adjusted by the idle adjustment screw[the big knob that turns the idle up and down], if you have a overly large vacuum on that cylinder, that means that the butterfly is closed off almost completely and it is not idling very good if at all. vacuum is at it's highest when the butterflys are closed. try turning up the idle some then adjust just as Promepheus has stated.
.. sounds like someone has really messed with your carbs..

unlees yamaha is differant then the 100 or more carbs I have adjusted including other Yammys I have set them all the same get them synced with #3 that is the one you adjust the rest to?? so if this is differant then the rest of them thats cool but I am pretty good with carbs and have never seen one this far out from the others?? 1-2-4 are adjustable and you adjust them to #3? if I am wrong let me know??

              Search Tech Tips

Prom has got it.............................However you could search for carb sync. in the tech tips. Very informative info! Sounds like you may possibly have linkage issues in the carb bank..............Just a thought? Pull 'em and check butterflys.............

L/H screw closes No2 and opens No1, R/H screw closes No3 and opens No4, No3 determined by rear idle screw.

Also middle screw opens/closes No1 and No2 only. No3 and No4 don't move when the middle screw is adjusted.

check to see if the restricter is still in your hose that goes to your gauges- this would cause a high vacuum reading.
                    .
. i hope your not sucking mercury into your motor!

                      "Mmmmmm...."

That wasn't a hhmmm... but a low, growly Mmmm(Like Marge Simpson does) Ok, technically, Mrbsyammy is correct. Carb #3 does not move. (and yes, I've worked on old Kawi's where each carb sychronizes individually and all vacuums have to match #3's, as that's where the idle screw hits)) Be that as it may.... Synchronize #1 to #2(mechanically, #2 doesn't move either) Synchronize #3 to #4, (or #4 to #3...mechanically, #3 doesn't move either) Synchronize the left bank to the right bank(technically, the right bank doesn't move, but is controlled by the idle screw, which happens to push on #3) The effect is the same, either way.

#1 and #2 both move, one's opening while the other's closing. Ditto for #3 and #4. Middle screw opens both #1 and #2 simultaneously, while #3 and #4 remain stationary.

yeah! 10-4 on the hmmmm...well all is good they were so badly out that it messed #3 the worst I have ever encountered at the top of the gauge...I also had a problem with the screw driver that I was useing on the #2 screw it wouldn't let it turn 360 so that wasn't much help but I didn't let it kick my ass I put a whooppen on it eh ha!!! all is well in Dodge thanks
