  • Uni Filters, Crankcase Breather I.D.

Hey all, going to put uni filters on the 3rd degree this week, have a couple of questions.

    1. What is the best way to route the crankcase breather hose, I used the search feature and came up with several possibilities, some recommend highest point, some just dangle it behind the case etc.

    2. What is the Inside Diameter (I.D.) of the hose, Ive heard it is best to attach a filter to the end, so I need to know what size of a filter to get for it.

    3. With foam uni filters, is there any problems with rain, will my legs protect it enough to keep them from sucking in water. The bike is stored inside when not in use, so im only worried about when riding.

    4. Stock main jets are 110's for the 80SG's right? at least thats what it looks like I have in it now, but the numbers are slightly hard to read.

    Thanks All!

    Bauer,
Just as a preference, I do not like the "foam" filters. They DO NOT do well in rain, and don't work as well as the K&N pods.
The breather should be mounted HIGH, so any oil build up will run back down the tube, and not out onto the ground. The second reason is water, as the rain cannot get in if the filter is mounted high.
I think a 1/2" filter is the correct size, but I'm NOT 100% on that, it may be 5/8".

I prefer the K&N's too, but I am being given the pod filters and jets from a close friend that runs a legend car up here in ND, Save me some cash so to speak.

I run a Uni foam filter in place of the stock air filter. The P/N is
          NU 4422.

I agree, free is great, but I turned in alot of dontated labor hours helpin him with the car to earn it, He also knows carbs REAL well, sets up and tunes the carbs for the race car at the tracks, so I always have that link as well.

ive got a K&N in the airbox now, but am wanting to ditch the heavy, and very annoying airbox to make future carb work MUCH easier, and also the always nice loss of poundage.

Now just to find a filter for the vent hose.

The big vent hose is 1/2 inch I believe.

found a chunk of gunk in the #3 cylinder float guide, removed that and put the carbs back on the bike with the new jets, went from stock 110's to 122.5's, and the uni's. Gas and seat and took it for a cruise. All I can say is holy hell. its 180 degrees different over what it was before the problems arose. And they arent even sync'ed and idle dropped yet. Will be doing that with a new digital syncronizer tom. night. Cant wait.

As for the filter for the breather, I think it must be somewhat of a standard size, because I just went into my local shop, and just told him I needed a little filter that goes on my crankcase breather.... he just turned around picked it off the shelf and handed it to me. It fit.

Not to be argumentative, but I took my breather tube with the filter on the end and routed it down behind the motor almost to the center stand. As for routing it UP to prevent rain getting in, it would seem to me that if it did get wet that way... straight to the crankcase goes the water. Where mine is, I know rain can't go UP that tube, and if any oil leakage did apply (It should just be blow-by gasses, no fluid) it would go to the ground.

                      Just my 2 cents...

                        Tod,
If the motor is hot, and you hit the rain, the motor will cool quickly. This can cause a vacum in the breather, and suck water up. That is what happened to my middle gear box, as the PO had the vent running down, not up as it needs to be.
                        Just my experience.
