  • What am i doing wrong?

    I NEED SOME ADVISE!!!!!

Well here it goes asking for directions or a little knowledge from someone!
I rebuilt the top end of an 80 XS G with Wiesco 1179 kit and i cant get the timing right!!!
I have the book and followed the directions to a T and lined up the holes in the cam and didnt rotate the cam without the tensioner or at least my finger holding tension on the chain, but it still wont get in time!!! I even tried the full turn to see if it was 180 out!!
Anyone please if you have any advise i would sure appreciate it,
If it wasnt for XS`s We wouldnt have power!

What do you mean by "Won't get in time"? Are the dots on both cams not lining up? I noticed you said "Cam" a couple times... not Cams.

      Just a Thought!!!

Just a thought. You don't have the intake and exhaust cam switched do you. Also the engine rotates clockwise so you need to keep the tension on the back side of the cam chain. Then work the slack foreward as you allign things.

Did you check that #1 piston was at TDC first, and then set the timing pointer at the "t" mark ??? Then align cam dots.
(both valves on #1 will be closed when at TDC and cams installed correctly)

You were able to rotate it w/o damage to valves???

          I NEED SOME ADVISE!!!!!

I'm used to talking to experienced mechanics and just had the thought that I don't know what level of experience you have.

Doing the top end on an XS, while not rocket science is a little more involved than an oil change.

How did you determine that you had #1 piston at TDC???

          btw, welcome to the forum

As you guessed i am not wise to the ways of an XS so this is a learning experience for me. The Cams seem to be in the proper place. The motor backfires and does not idle and then revs up when i try to set the idle screw on the carbs so it will idle. I have a carb kit coming going to try that to see if i can at least get a good idle out of it then i really dont know where to go from there!
I wonder if anyone knows a good rebuilder??????
I hope i am not out of place here, not being wise to the ways of experience mechanics but what i lack in knowledge i gain in heart and reading Chiltons!

Thank folks! I`ll keep you posted!

.. sounds like a "big fat" intake leak to me.

Am I wrong in thinking this new top end would totally throw off his carb sync? With it revving up, it sounds to me like he needs to do a good bench synch.

Hey yaXSama, could you give us a little more info on the bike? Was the bike running recently before the new top end, or has it sat for an extended period? If you can hold the throttle and keep it idling for a few, if you spray carb cleaner around the intake boots between your carbs and the head, listen for an RPM change. If it doesn't change, I am thinking it is just the carbs needing attention. But.... I have been wrong many times before... lol. Good luck and keep us informed.

YaX, if those dots aren't aligned exact they need to be re-done. It's tricky getting the dots lined up properly, patience wins out in the end, it's keeping the chain tight on the CRANK sprocket which is difficult. It's a matter of persevering and re-trying until they match correct. Can take 4 or 5 attempts sometimes.

                      Persistance Pays off!!!!!

Thank you very much folks for all you assistance. Believe me you helped me out a bunch.
I have the motor cycle running and it helps when the valves are straight and have more than 2 lbs of compression! Did a valve job!!!
The carbs work alot better when there is some vacume!! LOL

Still going to put the carb kits in should be purring like a XS should then!!!!
Cant wait to start my next project!!!!

                      Thanks again folks!!
                      Lets ride sometime!
