You got that right. When I was first working on my bike, I polished one thing than another. It was as though the bike was transformed one piece at a time. Now on my dad's 79F that he bought original, it takes soo much work that it is too exhausting to do. He used to ride in the rain a lot and it shows. The exhaust is in good shape, but the crankcase covers are pitted beyond belief. Also, when we started removing the rust from the tank, we were not too concerned with preserving the finish. All I can say is that we were amatures then and now it either needs refinishing or to be completely repainted. I will try to go with a more coarse paper on the case covers to make it easier for me, but I don't have any Idea what to do about the gas tank. Some of the phosporic acid leaked out and took the finish off. Also, to get the water out, we originally used a combination of Acetone, paint thinner, and MEK. Then we used the Kreme that he bought in 1991. Man that stuff was old. And the gas in the newly coated tank smelled really bad for a month. If anyone has any suggestions about what to do about refinishing the paint on the tank, your suggestions would be appreciated. I would prefer just to refinish it. I have a spray gun and must do the work myself because I have a lack of funds right now. I think it would be cool to repaint the tank, only if I could get the original paint, and I could put the gold trim back on.

    Thanks for the tips trbig!

First I used buffing compounds on my dremel. Then I got a little 3" buffing wheel and mounted it on my drill. With mothers mag and aluminum polish out and went to town. Both of the processes left directional marks so I went over it a couple more times with the mothers by hand with a soft cloth. After that was all done I painted in the black. Wiped with laquer thinner and waxed with carnuba.

My bike has a rattle can paint job that usually get changed out annually, and it lives outdoors most all year long (I sometimes try to tuck it into the 1/4 garage...(4th bedroom)) but by and large, it sits outside all year long; so...no polish for me. more power to you guys that have a place to keep your ride that doesn't involve a tarp and bungee cords, wish I did. have a nice day and ride safe

Mine is a daily ride. This includes dirt and tar 50 miles each way. She gets a wash about weekly and a little polishing every other. Not a chance of keeping dust and a few bugs off her.

Back in the early seventies there was a place on Yonge St. in Toronto that carried it. It was upstairs kinda down the alley a bit. You could also get a great rub down. So I heard

                      Yeah,
musta been the same store my buddy went to.
He'd overheard some co-workers talking about the wonders that tongue oil worked on wood.
Broke his heart when the sales person told him it was spelled Tung oil and was not for use on that kind of wood.

                          Polish vs. Paint

Sorry, but I'd rather ride than polish. So I just painted my engine, waxed the other parts, and wash it when it needs it. It may not be mirror finish but it looks good enough for me.
