My oldest son got his learners this week and today he took his first on the road ride on one of my bikes. He has ridden around the house before but not out on the road. We have a big paved loop where I work and he did about a half hour on there then out on a road for about 5 miles or so with me behind him in his car. He is going to be twenty and pretty well grounded. I had mixed emotions riding behind him in his car. Kind of made me giggle when he gave someone going the other way "the wave" though. So, any one on here ride with their kids? How old where they when they started and how did you deal with your wife??? My parents and wife want to shoot us both.

Was pretty much "yes dear" on social and many things concerning the kids, BUT life is too short and both the "little women" the "old man" as well as the kids need to live it.

I've gotten stuck in ruts before, just to sorta wake up later to WTF!!!

Calculated risk is taken in most things and part of living.

Want safe, lock your door and never go out. (even tho many people die at home)

MY dad tought me about the same way. I started out riding on his 1100F with a full fairing. I would go out riding around the neighborhood and then we went to a local park practicing turning, high speed braking, etc.. Then I took the basic course and got my license a week later. I found an 1100G on ebay, rebuilt it, and now I drive that. I mainly just practiced late at night with no one else on the road. For me it was easier because around 3 in the morning there aren't many people out. Now, I ride with my dad whenever we get a chance to go out. With gas at high prices it is still cheaper to ride 2 motorcycles rather than the car. We plan to take the advanced saftey course offered by the MSF just to make sure we both stay as safe as possible. He doesn't really need it with 25+yrs of riding experience, but I do. Anyway, with 2+ motorcycles riding around town is pretty cool

Actually it's not cheaper for two people to ride two motorcycles.

XS1100 gets about 35 mpg,
Most cars gets around 20 MPG?
Two people in a car @ 20 MPG = 40 MPG per person.
On the bikes each person still gets 35 MPG.
My Suburban gets 18 MPG. With our family of 6 that makes (6 x 18) 108 MPG per person.
Mass transit really does work.
Now I'm off to ride my XS

Pat the problem with your calculation is you are only thinking in terms of MGP. You need to rerun it using SPG. Smiles per gallon.

My son is 15 and I've been getting him started with the basics on my little 400. I imagine when he turns 17 or 18, it'll become his 400.

The state wont let him start until 17, and I wont let him start until after drivers ed, an MSF course, and a good bit of riding (and driving) time with me. He seems pretty eager to learn though, so I think he'll be riding before long at all.

Calculate this: two motorcycles at at least 40mpg. The beast(1986 suburban 350 engine 8-12mpg), or 96 lincoln town car at 16-18mpg. So in conclusion, for some it might be cheaper to drive the small car, but in my family, this is not so. If I am going to trade of saftey for mpg by driving an import car made from stamped out metal and plastic, I would rather have the joy of riding a motorcycle.

My oldest boy was about 11 when we got him his first dirt bike . At 15 he got a Yamaha 250 exciter. He's 36 now and rides a 1986 700 Virago.

My youngest got a Yamaha 200 combo when he was about 10 or 11. For his 15th birthday we bought and refurbished a '82 750 Maxim for him. That summer we (me on my XJ100 and him on his 750) took a 3500 mile ride around the southwest. Today he's 26and rides a 2001 Honda 750 Nighthawk.

My middle son, who is 35, rides an 1974 AMC Harley Sportster.
