  • price of paint

I went to the local auto parts store to price paint to do my tank
    well was i surprised
1 quart of black with hardner was almost 100 dollars

    so i tried something
went to walmart and got a quart of rust oleam gloss black
    also got some thinner
and some paint strainers total was 15 dollars

mixed it about 20% and it came out pretty good
i have a few fish eyes and a little run, which the seat will cover up

but it has a nice shine to it

It will look good until you start getting gas drops on it. the fuel will eat through most paints. I used the "duplicolor" automotive paint in a can for "daily ride", and the gas keeps taking off the paint.
I am spending about $300 on paint supplies to repaint the bike now. It will not be one color, and will be a b!t#h to rematch when I'm done, but custom paint is that way.
I hope to start shooting July 1 or 2, and should have pics of it later.

If you finish your job with the duplicolor high heat clear, it IS gas resistant. Swamp Thing is going on it's third year with this paint and the usual gas mishaps wash right off. Wax regularly and it will help protect it. Those who have seen the finish can't believe it came out of a spray can.

Ditto on using the Duplicolor clear.

I used the Duplicolor clear, and the California gas eats right through it!! Now I'm going SEM paints, with the hardner. I KNOW it's gas proof.

well thats the thing about an experiment
i will see how it holds up

hey i would rather make a mistake with 15 dollars worth of paint
then to mess up with 300 dollars worth of paint

my painting skills need to be honed more before i take on
              a project like that

When I 1st got my E running I started inquiring about having it painted. My concern was the different surfaces to be painted.
Metal tank, plastic side covers and fairing, fiberglass saddlebags and trunk.
All the automotive body shops weren't interested so I found a custom shop. The owner looked the bike over and said "I don't want to scare you but let me give you an estimate. I charge alot but I only do show-quality work" Looking around the shop was testament to his work. Sadly, if it looked that good I wouldn't want to ride it.
Anyway he quoted me $2600. He said that was mostly prep work. I asked what if I sanded and did a lot of the prep. He he wouldn't do it in that case. He told me if he did it it would come out perfect. I guess so for that price.
Like I said, I'd rater ride it than polish it.
I am tempted with the LG tho...............

Not the gas, it's the paint.
California rattle can paint sucks. Not allowed to sell the good stuff here, air pollution etc.......
