so here it is before and after a bit of work. looks quite a bit better with fairing and trunk gone.[IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] also, after the first test ride i thought it should have a little more performance, so i looked at the pipes cause i believe they are not stock cause there welded to the headers, so out comes the baffles and look at the tiny hole this bike had to vent the exhaust through,[IMG][/IMG] so i cut it off, now it sounds more like a bike and not a vacuum cleaner, but my drivway is a tad muddy so no test drive to see if it perfoms better. but the suns shining today so maybe this aft i can try her out. tough to do when its raining and im 2 miles from blacktop.

Not enough back pressure and you may have to re-jet the carbs.

My driveway is only 30 feet from the road with houses all around.

Resisted the urge to drill a few holes in my stock exhaust. Neighbors probably would not complain (where I could here them)

No problem. I like to be able to see what others have done.
The baffles are NOT from a stock exhaust, so you may end up with more power. You will probably need to check the plugs, as you will find you're running lean now. If you have the stock, non drilled air box, you may be ok. If you drill a few holes in the bottom of the airbox, you will have to go up at least one on your main jet.

there is no doubt that the bike has more power with baffles cut off, way better sound to, and i have no holes drilled in airbox but will check the plugs, before i did the baffles it seemed to load up when running at lower rpm but will check to make sure.

My 80G has "issues" but not too bad and I'm working (slowly) to see if I can get my spare set of stock exhaust to look better than what's on the bike now.

yes, would be nice to see your bike , as it seems your doing the same as me, working slowly on it. nice you have a spare set of pipes, i dont know what to do about mine. bad rust and pitted, can chrome pipes be sanded and painted?

Will look as good as the prep work allows.

Headers will need special paint. Many have recommended header paint from "Harley Davidson".

Although I have painted a lot of things, never done an exhaust yet. Plan on restoring a black exhaust system next month. Will start with removing every bit of rust, then weld/grind/weld/grind and file/sand it smooth. May have the mufflers powder coated. Still need to call a guy I know and ask about that. I'm not too shabby a painter and have the tools etc. to do it right.

I do have a second XS. 1980LG Midnight Special. It is currently in many pieces and still missing a few. Little while ago came across a good deal on a very low milage parts bike as well as other goodies for an XS. Other than time (in short supply around here) I hope to start soon on getting it running. Once it's done it should look/run close to new. (or at least as good as I can make it)

Not much to look at right now.
Mostly have been lining up the parts and checking over what I've got. Hate starting on something and not be able to finish.



When I got it, would not turn over. Pulled head and found a screw sitting on top of a piston. Luckily PO had not tried to make it turn over and no damage to head or cylinder.
