  • Black Engine Oil

After only about 200 miles on my 1980 SG I changed the oil due to a possible gas leak into the motor.
I had put on a new filter when I changed it the first time and used Castrol 20-50 Cycle Oil.
When I open the drain plug to drain the oil both times it was black as midnight.
Is this normal after such a short period of time?
Want to thank all of you for this site!!!!!
I have learned a lot and know where to ask Questions when I get stumped.

I can't feel any slippage when handle is full out.
It does seem to sometimes catch a little differently, it will kinda crab a little right at the end of the release.
I have not yet did the adjustment to it so that may be part of that problem.
Still learning to ride with a sidecar and the whole bike experience as I've been away for a long time, Glad to be back.
      Thanks

"They call him Slipper, Slipper, faster than lightning...."

Ah... the old problem of clutch slippage when using Castrol 20w50. Funny, but I run the stuff and have had no probs. Am I missing out on something?
Earls have additives, such as detergents, which hold combustion crap and by-products of oxidation in suspension, thus preventing coagulation of deposit forming gums and varnishes. Oil gets dirty quickly 'cause it's doing it's job.

.. has someone seen the movie The Wall recently?

.Roy, if your oil level has increased mysteriously then the gas is intering your crankcase, if not then it's what the marching hammers guy has said

            LOL GNEPIG.

I thought that's where I had seen the hammers before, but wasn't going to be the first to ask. Been many many moons and brain cells ago I watched that.

Take some oil, new one. Put it in a plastic see-thru bottle, shake like crazy for a few minutes, it'll get dim. Possibly black. Put it in an engine, run for a few min. and it will be pitch black. At least mine is.

Seen it... I lived it! (Well... except for the part of being a rock star, or having too much money and fame, or the psychotic hallucinations.... well, Ok... maybe it's just a cool movie that makes one think. Like how both Pink and his father "died" in the same manner... at the end of a phone call.

Usually when you're getting black oil in a short time, the rings are bad and fire is shooting down the sides of the pistons.

I'd run a compresssion check just to rule it out.

I've been running Castrol 20-50 in my bikes since the 1970's without any wet clutch problems related to oil.
