    360 inches, or 30 feet

Had been thinking about ridding off/on for a few years. Every time had the money something would just magically pop up to suck it away.

Had an extra boat trailer which I cut up and made into a 18 ft utility trailer and traded it for the 80G.

Apparently my "buddy" had the bike in the back of his shop for years but I'd never seen it.

So when we made the swap, it was about 30 feet.

The 80 MNS bought for $100.00 and another $150 for parts so far. About 40 miles round trip.

Went from Lake County to Modesto to pick up my freebie XS650H. Went from Frisco to Healdsburg to pick up my XS400 which had been stolen in SF and recovered (a year later!) in Healdsburg. Rode it home.

        hey Pro...

by the looks of that poor car... squatted down... hood raised up... might have been an easier trip if you just did this....

(Minus the giant phallic symbol of course)

Of course.... it would have required someone else liking you enough to want to be around you for 2400 miles to steer home! So I could see how that might not have been a legit option...

I drug my XS400 Heritage from Michigan to California via AMC Spirit in '84 and Bumper Hitch mounted Cycle Rack (one of those wheel troughs mounted to a ball type mount). Thats 2000 something miles if memory serves me (and it does less often now a days). Had to stop somewhere in Illinois to have the whole thing gusseted and welded directly to the bumper.

I was going home on leave and my brother in law needed the cash, so what was a guy to do? I got a bike. Used it for 5 years until I decided the cagers in Norfolk were out to get me!

I rode the old Greyhound 300 miles to get the Battle Cruiser and drove him home the same day. No problems and no bumper mounts!

Thanks for the replies. Now the wife thinks we are all goofy; not just me! If it works out I'll be flying to pick it up and driving it home. I'll let ya know how it works out.

I guess I would fall into the middle distance range on the bikes I have bought. My '80G was purchased from a guy about 5 miles from the house, but then I picked up a '79 SG off E-bay in Altoona, PA, about 650 miles round trip, and then bought Marty A's '78E and that was a 1,000 mile weekend adventure. I always love to see the "bring a helmet" comment on the bike ads and picture myself making a 1,500-2,000 mile ride back with yet another XS.
Prometheus, the photo you submitted reminds me of the time I stuffed my 1965 Honda 305 Scrambler in the back of my mother's 1967 Ford Custom to get it back home from school. Of course you've got twice the bike in half the car, so there isn't much of a comparison.
I, too, decided to trade in my ex-wife for a motorcycle, and now have 8 bikes plus 3 partzers. No real bitterness, but I know I got the best end of the deal.

Well, I bought it. It is the one Don was selling down in Tennessee. I haven't talked to him but my tenative plan is to fly down Friday or Saturday and drive from there back to Southern Maryland over the weekend and hit a few BBQ shacks on the way.

the 80LG was 40 miles round trip.

the 80SG was 6 hours round trip. I called the PO of the 80SG and had asked him "give me one good reason I should drive 3 hours to LOOK at this bike?"

he said, "my wife just had twins, I lost my job 4 months ago, and I need the money to buy a trailer to move the family down to San Diego so I can start my new job."
I went, sight unseen, with cash in hand

'don't regret it one day; the 80SG is THE best bike I've ever owned, ridden, experienced!
