  • In MEMORIUM...Riders down for the last time.

As this year comes to a close, we think about those that have gone. It was suggested to make a Forum, but I felt a PERMANENT THREAD in this forum would be seen by more folks more often!

Before XS11.com was around, there was the Old XS11 Yahoo group. One XSive from Colorado was fairly active, hosting rallies, and helping other Xsives. His name was Virgil "Curt" Marsh. He lost his battle with Cancer on Oct. 17, 2002. He was only 59. He was survived by his wife(SWMBO) Jean, and his daughter Victoria.

Below are a few posts by those who knew him from the Yahoo group:

We don't know what life and events hold for any of us at any particular time. Things happen and it sometimes isn't until much later that we realize the significance. The Colorado trip in 2001 was one of those for me.

Meeting and traveling with Deb, Mike C., Jim Scott. Reuniting with Indy Rick, Ron L. and Gary G. The journey was the event, not the destination, or so I though. When we pulled my XJ off the trailer in Kansas City and saw the real condition of the rear tire, I knew it would have to be replaced in Colorado.

After we arrived at camp and got as organized as any XS Camp can be, I asked Curt where I could get a tire replaced. He said he would help the next day, Wednesday. He came to camp on one of his XS's and we rode into town. Found the exact tire I wanted at "his dealership", at an Internet price. Back to his place to take the rim off. Long story short, we spend the entire day together. He helped pull the rim, drove us over to the dealer, used a little pull to get the mounting done quickly, took me to lunch then on a motorcycle shop tour of Colorado Springs. Thinking nothing of it at all, like it was what he did every day.

He was a gentleman, opinionated, but willing to listen to yours also, generous and just a great person. He helped me when I needed help, spent time with me when he probably had better things to do, he gave me a day of his life and I will ever be grateful. He didn't ask for anything in return. The only way to repay him was/is to do the same for others and that is what I try to do when the occasion comes my way.

My prayers to the Marsh family, my thanks to Curt, always.

    Bill Bowman

So sorry to hear about Curt's passing. Curt was a fine man and a great loss to all of us that knew him. The XS camp that he hosted along with his lovely wife and daughter, and put so much work into, will be great memories for all of us that were fortunate enough to attend. We are thankful for Curt being a part of our lives.
    TKAT
Adam and I met Curt at the XS Camp in Chama, New Mexico. He took us out on a ride along with Tkat, Indy and a couple of others. Curt Adam, my son eleven at the time, stopped at Chaco Canyon World Historical Site. Sixteen miles of washboard dirt road we arrived at a magnificent setting of Indian ruins and petroglyphs. He patiently explained the significance of the sight to us. Adam was captivated by his stories as was I. It seems that he and Jean spent their honeymoon there. This was our first real motorcycle trip, Boston to New Mexico and now to an ancient Indian world. He gave us memories that we will always share.

I went to XS camp in Colorado last year and there was Curt a little slower after after his illness as helpful and and frendly as ever. We took off on our own one day for a ride that included a stop at the Mountain Shadows Inn in Lake George, CO. He told the owner that i had come all the way from Boston to have lunch there again. The owner said " Boston, NY?" It ends up that she and I grew up less than 20 miles away from each other, 2300 miles away! We rode thru rain sleet and snow that day. Curt cautioned everyone to avoid riding with me unless they had foul weather gear packed as 2 years earlier we experienced the exact same weather

.We kept in sporatic touch but Curt never forgot Adam. Each year at christmas an old Yamaha patch would show up in the mail for him. The kid couldnt't have been happier.

We will miss him. We wish the best to his wife Jean and daughter Victoria.
We will all miss him greatly.

Good news folks! I spoke with Jean Marsh (Curt's widow) and she has blessed our decision to dedicate in Curt's name our annual award to be given to the attendee at a given rally who trailers the furthest. It is a very nice plaque assembled by TKAT, whose theme is centered on a belt buckle Curt gave him. The plaque will incorporate a dedication plate with Curt's name and his life-years. Smaller plates will identify the annual "winner."
Jean passes along her best wishes to everyone on the list, and her thanks for the many prayers and positive thoughts you passed her way during Curt's illness and passing. She told me the XSives gave Curt a bright place in his final years, and
re-ignited a spark she said had dimmed until he himself became an XSive. She is convinced that riding gave him a reason to live longer than he might have without it.
She seems in good spirits, and says Curt's XS has been sold to a friend of his who is taking every opportunity to ride. What a great legacy! Your scoot goes to a friend who will enjoy it as much as you did...
If anyone is active on the other list would you please pass this along? I'm registered there, but rarely visit. I know Curt has friends there who would enjoy hearing that Jean is well.

    Tribute to Pathfinder.

Pathfinder aka Dave Delzell of Houston, Texas, was born on April 10, 1955, and passed away of a massive heart attack the morning of July 23, 2006 at 5am. He was only 51. He was survived by his loving wife Cynthia, and his three children, oldest daughter Adriana, son Joshua & daughter Shanna.

A wake was held on July 27th, and his funeral on the 28th, with military honor guard, he was an Air Force Veteran. A Motorcycle Tribute Ride was held after the services.

Below are several quotes from Cynthia, and those that knew him.

To all of the XS11 family: I am truly touched by all of the beautiful things being said about David or as you all know him "Pathfinder". He did consider you all his family and he loved finally finding a group that he could be involved with. And as you all know his bike was indeed his pride and joy. I watched him tear down and rebuild that bike just about on his own. He got a lot of advice from you all and a lot of moral support and he loved it. He was so proud when he finished that bike. He said you see, you have no faith because when there was a thousand pieces of his bike laying in our garage, I told him he would probably never get it back together.

David was truly a wonderful man. When we met and started dating in 1994, I told him he was my Knight in Shining Armour.

I (Cynthia) will not be riding with you all..David would literally come back and haunt me. We used to ride all the time when we first started dating and after we were married but after we had our daughter I was always afraid to ride in fear that something would happen to the both of us at the same time and leave our daughter without parents.

He tried to get me to go with him so many times after Adriana was born and I would always refuse although I did enjoy our rides in the country. I've been on the "Pathfinder" one time after Adriana was born, we stuck her between us one evening when she was probably about 2 years old and rode about 3 blocks from our house to our cousin's house.

Since then, I have been on the back of a bike one time and that was the day of David's funeral services when I rode on the back of Dan on his Harley in the tribute ride for David.

I know that you all know that Planedick bought David's bike. It's a beautiful bike and I know he will treat and take care of it just as David did. It makes me feel good that it's going to one of the XS11 guys and it made me feel even better when I found out what Dick does for a living. As some of you know, David was a Cutting Tool Specialist and worked in this line of work since he was 16 years old, starting in his Dad's company.
Again, I would like to thank all of you for being such a huge part of David's life. He loved you all.

Thank you all for for touching his life and making him so happy when he was riding with all of you (Sunday go to Church). It certainly made a difference in his life and it makes me so happy to know that he had such wonderful friends. It truly touches my heart.

These guys and gals are wonderful, they were David's extended family and now they are mine as well. He loved them all and had a great time everytime he got to be involved with any of them. All of the XS11 group has touched my heart and my life in so many wonderful ways. And I am so thankful that David's bike "Pathfinder" is going to such a wonderful person. That bike was his passion but it's going to a man with a passion as well. And that makes me very happy and I know it would make David happy. Thank you again for your thoughts and mine with you as well....Cynthia

Dave (Pathfinder), Hippie Dave and I used to "go to church" on Sundays. That was Pathfinder's euphumism for a good ole Sunday ride.

He'd call me the night before, and say, "We're goin' to church tomorrow, so be there at 9am." "There" of course was the gas station where we always met before the ride.
Signature:"Life is not a journey to the grave, with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body; but rather to skid on broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming:

    WOW - What a ride!

    GrayWizard:
The First of the TeXSives, to ride heaven my time we get there he will have all the roads charted for us who follow.
What else would expect from some one called Pathfinder!!!!He Rides with GOD.

And in Dave's own words, you can read a funny story he told in this thread.
