Vac advance?

How did you come to the conclusion that it needs to be replaced?
On my bike it didn't appear to be doing anything when I had the cover off with the engine running. Took the hose off the air box and put a big meat baster type hypodermic thingy on it and drew it back to create a vacuum, the advance plate did not move. Thinking that the advance unit was bad I removed it from the bike and retested, it appeared to be working fine. It turned out that the advance plate was binding up and couldn't move so I took the assembly off and gave it a good cleaning then lubed it up with some 3-1 oil, that did the trick!
If you remove the advance plate you'll notice that it sits in a sleeve that looks like a drum, it's the glove inside that drum that needs some attention, it can only be accesses from the back hence the need for removal. Also while you're at it you'll probably want to remove the centrifugal advance mechanism and give that a good cleaning and lubing as well, I used grease for that.1980 XS1100G
I identify as a man but according to the label on a package of Stauffers Baked Lasagne I'm actually a family of four!
