  • Midnight Special Bridgestone Tires

Is there a source for replacement Bridgestone MAG Mopus tires with raised white letters used by Yamaha on the 80/81 Midnight Specials? I just picked up an 80 LG with 7K miles on it, but the original tires are crap and unsafe. I'd like to maintain the original appearance since this bike will be restored. I'm willing to ship from anywhere in the world. Thx!

    Look for them here.

Brands change their models over the years so may no longer be offered.
Who even remembers that the Mag Mopus was original equipment
Be thankful there are still tires made in the right size.

Hey....I do! I even recognize them in pictures.

XSIVEUS: I think the Bridgestone Spitfire is what you are looking for. They are available black-wall and raised-white lettering.

I have them on my SF:

        Hi Mike,

That's what I'll be ordering. As far as I can tell only Dunlop and Bridgestone make MC tires with raised white letters. As I'd like to stick to something as close to stock as possible, the Spitfires are the only ones in the right sizes available. It's odd that Bridgestone still makes the L303 Mopus tires in blackwall, but discontinued white letters. Guess it just went out of vogue. I called Bridgestone to see if they'd do a special run and then get members of the forum to participate, but I only got the corporate run around.

        Thanks,

        Glen

BTW Mike, very clean looking Special. You keep that in great shape.

Here's a link to the Midnight Special I just dragged down from Washington to California. Mechanically it's in pretty good shape with only the brakes and fuel system needing attention, but cosmetically a number of items need to be re-done. I'm starting with the tires and brakes before tearing down all the painted parts.

            XSSIVEUS:

Thanks for the compliment. That bike came from a tiny Ohio farm town for $450. It was a fun project, and I got to learn how to do the transmission fixes.

Your project is not bad at all even before you get started. Can't wait to see it fixed up. Have fun!
