I'd like to point out that we've got spam and spammers. You might not notice it much and if that's the case then I'm doing my self-appointed job well enough. However, the number of new spammers registering to this site has skyrocketed recently. In the last week there have been (hopefully) 3 "real" users to almost 2000 spammers.

We're running an older version of vBulletin and a not-quite recommended server setup, which doesn't automatically handle spam registrations well. Because of this, I enabled a manual review process, which basically made me the gatekeeper to new users. I don't want to keep "real" people out of this site, but I do want to prevent spam. An unfortunate side-effect to this is some users might have to wait up to a week to gain access as a member. Another unfortunate side-effect is that recently a few users didn't even get the proper welcome email after their registration was accepted. I'm working on upgrading the server/vBulletin, though, so I expect this process to improve soon.

I'm hoping this post will trigger a message to these new users and that the community can give them a proper welcome. I'd also like to apologize for any delay you might have experienced:

I too appreciate the effort involved in keeping the forum up and running. The question I have is what takes more effort, vetting new members or deleting posts that are obviously spam? Sure, I've seen spam on here but is it really THAT disruptive? I'll leave these questions up to the moderators.

Good question; up until recently, it was pretty easy to keep on top of manually moderating new members. Once we migrate the new new server, I'm hoping I don't have to do that anymore, though. Spam hasn't ever been that bad, but with thousands of new registrations per week; it could potentially all hit at once at a scale we haven't seen before.
