Total noob. Went to change the oil today and drained the middle drive oil instead of engine oil.
Long story short, bike ran for about 1 min. Smoke everywhere and oil leaking from air box valve.

I drained the oil, cleaned out air box
Tomorrow I’ll be purchasing oils for both engine and middle drive.

Question how much damage did I do?
will it be safe to start the engine .

I don't think anything should have been damaged, but it depends...

Did you overfill the engine crankcase, thinking it was empty? That would explain the oil in the airbox, which would make the engine burn oil and smoke. If yes, it's probably OK if you clean up the mess.

I wouldn't worry about the gears, they weren't doing anything when you started the engine,(unless you actually rode it), and besides, they were already coated with oil.

I would put in the correct oil and correct quantity in the engine and the middle gear, and see how it goes.

Probably should pick up an air filter if it got oiled.

All oils have been replaced as per manual.
Took a couple of tries to get her to start.
Started smoking, but after a couple of loops around my neighborhood it stopped.
Ordering a new air filter. I have a uni type air filter.

Unfortunately, I did move the bike about 200 yds with out oil in the middle drive. Hopefully I didn’t do too much damage.

Sounds like you know where the fills and drains are now, LOL. Always open the fill holes first.
no harm maybe a little foul on the plugs. Run it till next year's tune up.

                  Welcome Zzrocks.

It's nice to see someone who wants to make the bike healthy before they ruin something.

The post from bikerphil is a good place to start.
