This is how I do it.
Lots of websites out there with 'emoticons' or 'smileys' on them.
When you find one, just copy the address, click on the IMG button above and paste the address there.
If the image you want is not on a page by itself, you can right click on the image and click the menu that says "properties" and then copy the address that appears in the window.

Some hosts do not allow direct linking to the image. Once you put the url into your browser and it comes up, it is cached and will continue to display in the page when you open it . . . the rest of us get the dreaded "red x"Comment
