  • 1980 Standard Side Covers - Trade?

    XS Folks,
I recently acquired a few items from a 1980 Standard that are of no use to me. I have three(3) Specials. I have very little knowledge of the Standards.

These side covers are in great physical shape BUT the paint is POOOP! They will need a bit of prep to be ready for your primer & paint. I did the EASY work and used a random orbit with 220 to remove several layers of paint and some filler from the face of the RIGHT which seemed to serve no purpose except to cover gold striping that the PO was to lazy to remove but rather covered with filler.

There are NO cracks or breaks and the locking tab is intact. It appears the PO replaced the right cover with one from another bike?

I was surprised to see one cover has SLOTS while the other has HOLES for mounting. I don't know if this is normal??? Please let me know if it is "Normal" by responding to this post as I would like to know. Again, I have little knowledge of the Standards.

The locking tab for the LEFT cover is intact and does not appear to have been repaired, glued, or otherwise screwed with. I scraped the paint off as best I could to give a good view.

I would much rather TRADE these for parts of RELATIVELY equal value for parts that would have some use on my Specials rather than sell them. If you don't have anything to trade I really don't know what these are worth as I've seen Evil-Bay ASKING prices for these all over the place.

Again, a TRADE for Special Parts (SG) would be preferred.

    Sincerely,
    Kurt

Those are from 2 different bikes. The one with the slots in the top is from a 78-79 standard. The one with the holes is from a later bike, not sure with one though.

      78/79 Right & 80 Left

      Nathan,
      Thank you for the info.

I guess that means I have a 78/79 right, and an '80 left for trade Don't know how the PO used them together, but I don't have the frame to determine that......he must have done something creative

That is the way they are on an 80G.
Slots on the right side, and holes on the left, lockable side.
Spacing of the holes looks right.

          Kurt,

My 80 std side covers have the round cutouts on the lockable left side. It has the slotted holes on the right side, with the press in post to the rubber gromet.

Looks correct for an 81H also. The colour of the right looks like 81H

              CaptonZap & Ekim,
Thank you for the clarification. I know they were on an '80 and the sticker inside of the left is OEM for an '80.

Anyone with anything they would like to trade for them...send me a PM.

              KURT

P.S. I'm have a couple other Standard items that I don't think I will be using and several other items being shipped down here from the same bike that I expect to have in a few days including: The little bit bigger standard tank (6 Gallon? perfect!), '80 Seat (decent), rear venturer rack (two XS11 guys already asked for that), controls, speedo/tach, front fairing (decent), bag mounting brackets (Fair), etc., etc. I'll keep ya'll posted here.

                Kurt,
I wonder if you have a Venturer with some 80G parts on it

Too inexperienced to recognize a Venturer

                  Phil,
Honestly, I know so little about the Standard Models & Venturer I could be sitting on a Venturer and I wouldn't even know it.

I don't actually have "The Bike" but for all purposes I will have everything from it except: Frame, Rims, Forks, Front Brakes.

The saddle bags are APPARENTLY the Venturer type or maybe actually Venturer bags. I'm stripping all the paint of them now and will use them on my Mayberry Duck as they have the hinges and the key lock unlike my older set.

                    Kurt,
I had forgotten you only had the parts and not the whole bike. Sounds like another RARE Venturer had been cut up into a chopper. Makes the remaining 81H even more rare. Would you have a look inside those bags and see if lightly molded into the plastic is "Made in Canada" I recall in the very bottom of mine?

Yes. They say made in Canada in the bottom and Yamaha inside the lids.
