    The bike that had the failed bearing was a 1979SF showing only 10K miles. But still had the age factor. The big bearing may or may not have been changed in the past. I am unsure of that. The smaller failed bearing had a few rough spots in it, but was not seized. Replaced it anyway.

    For all of you that have ordered bearings from James, be patient, they will get to you.

      James, just brushing your thread against the Armco for a moment -- hang on!

      I already got my bearing from James; shipped fast and arrived even faster! I have two XSs now so I needed another spare bearing.

      10,000 miles is nothing for these bikes. If that's the actual mileage and not a rolled over 110,000 miles then the wheel bearings would not have been changed and they'd probably still have the original factory grease in them.

      Age really wouldn't affect the wheel bearings themselves unless the bike wasn't stored properly and/or literally put away wet -- as in pressure washed and water got into it.

      The PO of Columbo, my first XS, did that. He took one look at the snorkel coming out of the air box and figured it must be a submarine. There was water left in everything and I do mean everything! while it was stored for years. In a garage under a moisture-collecting protective plastic tarp. With a unvented clothes dryer less than six feet way.

        Package arrived a couple days ago, Thanks! Since I don't plan to use right away is there a "best practice" way to store a bearing?

          Should come already wet with a lubricant and wrapped in waxy paper or plastic wrap.

          I unwrap the bearing and add a coating of motor oil then rewrap and store in a zip lock sandwich baggie and label it so I won't forget what the heck it's for
