The only thing I know about the backrest is that it came with my 79 special. It was not on the bike although I assume it was at one time. Crappy picture taken just before dark. Will try to get a better shot earlier in the day.

That backrest looks like it is adjustable to fit every model. Is that the case or are my eyes decieving me? Might be at slight different angles but if that adjusts to fit the 80SG I would be interested for sure. Might be interesting with the rear grab bar tho. Been looking for a low profile backrest like that for awhile. My wife would be happy if it did work.

Thanks for the info George. I bought my 79 from my brother. Originally it had a broken Speedo needle. I guess when tried to order a new set that's what he ended up with. He handed me the box and said they were 78 gauges. Suppose I shoes repay them correctly and do my homework next time

                  Don't worry about it.
Those will work for any 78-81 XS1100 so the interchangability is there.
They are nice looking gauges. If I needed a replacement set, I'd ask for those.
That being said, most 80/81 owners would prefer the 78/79 ones that go to 160mph.

I'm currently watching/searching ebay all the time and I see a few posted up there that are listed with the wrong years. Most of the time, most sellers don't know the differences and their set(s) may even come off a particular year, or they get the manufacture year mixed up with the model year.
(example, my 80G was built in Nov79)

You're kinda of right about the homework thing. Those of us that have been on the forum a while now see this kinda of thing pop up all the time.

Information/knowlege is the key to sucess in everything that you do.

Yet another reason I love this site so much!

I agree with all of that. I'm into a lot of stuff, and over the years have always searched out a forum that was specific to my particular interest. Because of this I have met many good people, and profited from the wealth of knowledge that is created when you pool together so many minds in one place. I have been up extremely late the past couple weeks on here soaking up everything I can! As far as the gauges go I guess all I can hope for is someone who is looking to build a "factory" bike.

The backrest is adjustable. It has set screws on both sides that allow the " legs" to move in and out.
