If you still have them when my tax returns come in I might take them off your hands. I have a post snapped off in my #3 carb held together with JBWeld...makes setting the float real interesting...

Hey, not to ruin a deal but don't want to see anything bad go down. Your '79 carb parts won't work with the carbs for sale here. Slides are a differwnt size, needles, tubes, jets all different sizes and not really compatible with the different years carb.

Do you still have these? They look like they will fit my 80SG. One question tho, why is the pilot mixture screw towers different heights in the last picture?

I just saw a pic on another thread that it looked to me (picture quality wasn't so good) that on that pic, #3 idle posts was lower.

Maybe on some of the 80 carbs, in that transition year between early and later carbs, some got put together with lower idle towers.
It's got me thinking now.... when I get home today, I'm gonna look at my 2 sets and see if those posts are lower.

                  Here's the thread: http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=35885

This the pic I was looking at : (look at the idle post heights, 1 & 2 are above the choke rail, while #3 is lower)

Edit: Just had a thought: maybe they were taller, they just got 'sawed' off instead of pulling that sill plug/cap out to get to the screw.

No they never mixed the two carb body styles. It could be that the previous owner cut the two posts down so that there was not a empty tower above the jet so it wouldn't fill up with crud.

From the carb body standpoint, the 78-79 are identical, and the 80-81 are identical. Mix and match BODIES between the two all you want. It was the jetting that made them different.

Also, the jets are identical across all of them in that one will screw right into the other, the size openings in the jets are different. However, the slides and diaphrams are not the same size.

As to the towers, most likely some one had a tough time getting those mixture screws out of those two carbs and cut the tower down to let them work on the screws more easily. They do tend to get junk in the threads and stick badly, working them out down that tunnel is a major PITA.
