Putting everthing back together and figured I would rout the speedo cable through the little rubber keeper on the side of the fender. It has never been here before and always looked a bit snug. Anyway with this new (correct?) routing it comes up about 1 - 2" short. Thankfully it is short only on one end 
but it does cause a problem. Perhaps the PO replaced the original?
So, does anybody have a proper speedometer cable for a 1980 SG? Sell, trade, barter... Please let me know. I already tried Andreas.
