  • Thinking of selling my 4-1 to buy a 4-2 (unless someone here wants to TRADE!)

I have an 4-1 system on my 79 Special now and I'm not sure which brand it is. Going from the pics it is either a Kerker or Mac but I'm just guessing and went by the XS11 exhaust page and compared muffler shapes and header designs. When I bought it the bolt/rivet for the baffle was missing so I lost the original baffle but took a chance and ordered a MAC "Performance" baffle and it fit perfectly find and sounds great. The "Performance" baffle, from what I was told is just a regular baffle except it doesn't have the fiberglass packing around it so its just the tube type baffle and you could always add fiberglass around it. I trade my 99 Honda CBR 600cc sport bike for this XS11 so I was used to the loud 4 cylinder aftermarket pipe sound and I like it without the fiberglass. I ran it without a baffle at all for a while and this really isn't that loud but sounds really racey/sporty.

Anyways, with the style of my bike I'm thinkiing I'll go with some turnouts. I don't want to go with the Harley look but I always liked turnouts on a muscle bike and I can't afford and don't want to spend $400 on a brand new Mac set since the rest of my bike isn't in show condition.

Anyways, I don't have a pic of the exhaust since I painted it but I have a pic of it from the previous owner. Since then I pulled it off and sanded it down and painted it. I was rushed and didn't have a garage so it didn't come out so good but looks a lot better than what it did when I first got it. Now there's some surface rust on the header pipes near the motor but if it's going to be off the bike anyways it'd be easy sand and repaint the whole thing and have it look good. Anyways, here's a pic of it before... apparently the previous owner tried to paint it too (it WAS a chrome system) but his paint faded fast and looked grayish white. Mine is more of a gunmetal/flat black.

I can get some better pics of the exhaust as it is now if anyone is interested in a trade. There's also a set of turnouts USED on ebay right now that I wouldn't mind to have but they're $150 and unless I sold this I just can't put that into the bike right now especially for something that's just cosmetic.

Oh btw, a trade would be great but in case someone is just interested in BUYING the exhaust straight out then I guess $150 is ok. That'd give me enough to shop for something else used and is cheaper than some really rough and nasty exhausts I've seen on eBay that are in much worse shape than mine. There's a 4-1 on there now for $189 that looks like mine if you buried it for a year and dug it back up. Mine has a few dents on the header pipes on the bottom (won't see it unless you're laying on the ground looking for it) and it doesn't affect performance and isn't leaking.

Id be interested in a trade. Honestly couldn't tell you the name of my system but Im pretty confident its the Mac 4-2 w/turn outs. Ill try to get you a picture Thursday if you are still interested. The system is chrome with very minimal wear. I would be open to straight trade.

Hey that sounds great, I'd be interested in trading you. Yours may look a lot nicer than mine though and you may not be so interested once you see it but I'll try to get some pics too in the next day or two. It was originally a chrome system but apparently it had surface rust so the previous owner sanded it down and did a sloppy paint job on it. I sanded it down again and resprayed it and it looks better than it did but the only problem is I didn't spend enough time sanding and painting the header pipes coming off the motor so theres some surface rust that's poked through. I was going to take it off sometime this Summer and sand it more thoroughly and take my time painting it but haven't yet.

After looking at the pictures better and pricing out what it would cost to make it look the way I want I've decided to back out. I'm sorry, its just more cost effective to go new or find the system I want already done.

I've kinda gotten used to the 4-1 and now I like the sport bike sound but I'm still interested. Is yours the MAC 4-2? You got any pics? I'll admit mine isn't in the best looking shape but isn't rusted out. The previous owner tried to spray paint it black and it looks ok from a distance but needs to be sanded and painted again. So if your 4-2 is in excellent shape you may be disappointed with mine.

Anyways, let me know and we can swap pics if you want. I can even get a sound clip of the pipe on my bike if you want.
