1980 is not compatible with an 81, that's a 1 year TCI, just like the XJ TCI, unique to that year unless you switch everything over to the earlier stuff, including all the parts on the engine.Cy

The 81 had the mech adv built into the TCI. As Cy stated, you can use the 80 TCI if you also change out the ignition assembly for the 81 that has the mech advance mechanism.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

I don't regularly follow this parts thread, so I may be late to the party, but I have a good used TCI from my 81H donor bike that I can't use on my 80G runner. ( Other parts are available too, I suppose I need to go through the boxes and post up.)
