I have 2 SG's and 1 SF and neither have ever had silver tank emblems. My understanding is the 81 had silver tank emblems.

Other way around, actually. Black Ice is an LG with its original chrome tank and sidecover badges. This is another one of those weird jokes the Yamaha engineers came up with like pairing a square headlight with round mirrors on the Standard, and a round headlight with rectangular mirrors on a Special.

I thought I was right, I have the 80 LG and mine are chrome

Then your bike has the golf cart emblems that some guys resale as bike tank badges. Standards, specials and midnight specials all had gold and black badges.

Ah No! I am the original owner of the bike. I bought the first one sold here in St.Petersburg Fla. It was still in the crate when I bought it. Assembled by dealer and I drove it home the next day.
Unless some has a serial number less then mine here in the states. Then Yamaha has fooled us all about how unique the MNS really is.

Strange. All the MNS I've seen here on the left coast back when I was working in Yamaha shops in the 80's had gold emblems. Perhaps you're right and it was a mid year change...

Same here including ALL the pics from Yamaha. XS part number finder also lists it as black and gold.
