  • 1981 XS Parts bike or ?

I have a 1981 XS1100H(?). It's the full dresser version. The bike belonged to my dad. Unfortunately, he parked it in the early 1980's with only 6799 miles on it. It sat until the mid 1990's when he took the tank off and the carbs off and gave them to a friend of his to refurbish. Unfortunately, his friend passed away before completing either, and I was able to get them back (the carbs are in pieces in a brown grocery bag). Here it is 2008 and it appears it will cost quite a bit to get it road worthy. My question is what is something like this worth (it has 6799 original miles and two zero mile Dunlop K491s on it)? Thanks for any response.

Britt, IF the tires are older than two (2) years old, they are NOT GOOD. The bike, if all the parts are there, is probably worth about $250 to $750, depending on how bad someone wants the bike.
Running well, it should be worth about $1500. The difference is the cost in time and parts to get it running.
If you go through this site, you will see it IS possible to fix the bike on your own, if you are inclined. If you do ride, I would suggest you work on it yourself, and keep it as a reminder of your dad. I'm sure he would like that, and you could ride it on the nice days, and hopefully it will keep him in your mind.
Just my personal opinion, yours may vary.

So it's low miles but is the engine turning and how has it been stored?

Rusted to the bone or pristine?

I would restore not part it but haven't seen the challenge....

Thanks for the responses. DriverRay, the tires are about two years old. I at one time started to make it run again but had second thoughts. Now I'm leaning back towards fixing it.

mn2346, it has been stored since the mid eighties in a garage in Houston, but has been under a cover next to my house (also in Houston) for the past 2-3 years. The motor turns, but there is some rust on the chrome and the usual oxidation on the cases. What to do, what to do...
