Not a bad project bike. It is not worth what they are asking for it. Not an 81 it is an 80 and it has the typical problems for a midnight. Pipes do look decent and are original. Paint on the case covers would need to be redone to get them looking right. New tires wouldn't hurt either. Probably needs all the normal maintenance upgrade items such as brakes and carb cleaning etc... Like I said would be a good project bike. Would need to get it at a much lower price to make it worthwhile.

I completely agree with Canjun31. It is a great project bike and doesn't look abused, just older. Having restored a number of Midnights, including a 1980, the bits and bobs are there, but most items will require refinishing and the pipes will withstand only so much polishing before the black chrome coating comes off. Information suggests the engine might need to be pulled. All in all, depending on the level you'd want to take this bike, the investment will probably be in the $4-5K ranges unless you are capable of doing first class painting, plating, powder coating and all the mechanical work yourself. I farmed out the repainting my my XS1100LG to someone who does show quality work, and it cost me $1500 5 years ago. Since I planned on keeping the bike, it was worth it; the bike looks new today.

If you sold it, you'd be extremely lucky to break even. One should to want to restore this bike to keep it. Having said all that, I would pay $1500 for it with the understanding I planned on keeping the completed bike. Of course, you could patch it up, give it a bath and ride as is, but where's the fun in that? When these bikes are really done well, they are stunning and run like the wind.
