Goin' to look at it tomorrow, if it's any good I'm going to get it for my stepson and we'll work on it together.
He's going with me but doesn't know it's his yet

            Got it !!!

233.5 miles round trip and a nice day with my stepson, which our schedules haven't allowed very often.

I revealed to him, 'bout 7 miles from looking at the bike, that it's his B-Day gift for his 41st at the end of this month.
After we got it home he told his Mom (SWMBSO) that today reminded him of when he turned 8 yrs. old when I built his first mini- bike and again when he turned 12 and I bought a pristine Honda SL70 also for his B-Days.

The bike is all there except for the chain lock, even the tool kit is there.
It's all original, except for the mirrors I think, and was bought from the dealer with the high back seat. Pretty much a barn find with 11,827 miles on the clock.

A couple pics and more to come:

From the pics, those are stock mirrors. They changed them across the XS Special line for 1981. Mike's XS has replicas available.

The backside looks the same as yours. I have a set, still in the box.

I wanted a new XS650 Special in 1983. The Yamaha dealer in Daytona Beach had one with that seat on it and wouldn't swap it back to stock. IIRC, the price was over $2500. I bought my new bike someplace else with the stock seat and an $1800 price.

That is a nice score. Congratulations!

                      Thanxs Everyone !!!

Marty, thanks for the clarification of the mirrors, not sure if they'll be used or stashed away yet.

Got a chance to do some pre-project disassembly evaluation today.

PO has silicone caulking in the pilot screw recesses not sure yet if the screws are there or not

                      Tank looks clean . . .

                      BUT . . . unrepairable

Is this the whole sending unit ? Is it a thermister ?

                        That's the whole sending unit.

I don't know how it works, but I have one from an old, grungy, tank and it works fine.

It is binary - ON/OFF only for the warning light in the tach.
