Be patient. I waited a long time before I found one close to me at a reasonable price. Soon after, I saw a second one for the same. I paid $1200 and saw the second one for $1200.

To Marco r/e bike in Albuquerque

Yes I checked out that bike in Alb. The guy was eager to sell, He even rode
the bike to Santa fe to show me. It was a mess, fork oil had leaked into the
brake pads encrusting the forks, pipes and engine. ripped seat and missing
side cover. Three cylinders had around 60 lbs each and the last plug spun
around but wouldn't come out. He was asking 2k. Blue book for one in good
running cond. was $1,500. I said $1,000. He said he wanted his 2k and
would hold out. The bike's been on Craigslist since August. I'm presently
bluilding another xj650 out of a parts bike and a titled frame. So, I think
I'll wait until one drops into my lap for $700-$1000 around here. Checking
a bike out before commitment is important.

Be patient. Something will come around. I got my first two XS's by trading my XJ750 for them and the guy put up a hundred extra buck to finalize the deal.

There will be deals to be had if you are patient. Don't just check Craigs List, try other local want adds (TV station's online sites sometimes have them).

Of course! You should never buy a used bike without giving it a thorough going-over.

Sounds like you know your way around bikes, and what to look for in a used bike (especially one as old as the XS11).

The right bike at the right price is out there for you, Joe ...

And it will probably "drop into your lap" when you least expect it ... I know mine did!
