No, we certainly do not want that to happen. A couple of issues against it is that it is not running and there is no title. They do not know the condition of the engine? Could this be the third strike?

In michigan, no title is not an issue. How bad is it in other states? I know I can go to the SoS and get a title in 45 minutes as long as it's not reported stolen. As far as not running, I like bikes that have been sitting and look as untouched as this. It means all the stuff is there to get it running, it'll just take some work. How much would it be to ship a bike like that to Michigan?

Getting a title in Georgia for this bike is easy enough also. I got a shipping quote (only one so far) from uShip to ship it to Georgia. It was $1,000! Should be able to get a better price, but I am not willing to spend much more than $500.

I'm about 90% sure you don't have to be a resident of Michigan to get a title but I'm pretty sure you can only register a bike in Michigan with a Michigan title (maybe not since what would people do if they moved here with motorcycles from another state?). Worse case scenario you could always get a Michigan resident to title it and then "sell" it to you (for a $1) and then you would be able to get a Michigan title (my roommate is from ohio and did this).

There is no inspection at all. We don't have those for anything because we're not a bunch of tree-huggin Communists! You can't imagine what kind of oil-spewin, gas-guzzlin, dirty old rust buckets that are on our road.

I've lost the title to at least 2 bikes so far and all you need is the VIN. They do a search up at the capital over the phone (you have to wait ~45min for them to get back to the SoS branch) to make sure it's not stolen. HOWEVER, this only works if the bike is at least 10 years old and valued at less than (~$2,500). They make you print off a kelly-blue book value estimate. Not sure if you can get a Michigan motorcycle re titled in another state but I would imagine so because people move all the time with their bikes. My buddy just moved to Texas with his and I haven't heard about any problems.

You cannot sell the bike for $1. Minimum is $200 to non-family members, and that $200 is taxed 6% upon title transfer, + $15 title transfer fee. You can sell a bike to a non-resident. Lost title? Apply for a "quick title" at certain branches. A VIN search is done for any leins on the bike. Another method is the PO signs a notarized receipt stating he is the owner, etc. SOS will use that to apply for a new title. Can a non-resident apply for a title? Dunno. I do know one major issue in Michigan is death. I sold a few of our bikes to a guy, who in-turn sold them to a guy in Ohio. My mom signed the titles over. Ohio said no-go, dad has to sign them. My dad passed away. So, SOS asked my mom to fill out forms, include death certificate, etc.

$200 is not the minimum according to my SoS branch because I put $50 on my last form and it went through just fine. Unless my SoS was just being dumb.

In this case, the 'no title' thing isn't too big of a deal. If the seller is a licensed wrecking yard, you would take the receipt from them to DOL, probably have it inspected by the state patrol, then a new title would be issued, although I suspect it would be marked 'salvage'. The wrecking yards are required to turn in all vehicle titles to the state.
