I wish I could go rescue it. If the vin checks out, no title needed in my state. Mike Pittman, this could be the bike to convert to an R.

I got some pix from the guy I am not thinking it is a 79 looks like an 80 81 special? Round gauges did they use in 79? I guess its a 79 special?? Its a little rough missing lots of parts seat air box fender I will post a pix as soon as I can. Not a bad deal but for me a 9 hour ride a little far. I could sure use the parts for my rebuild if it this is an 80 something special
No title? its also on one very nice stand someone knows bikes to have this stand? Hum?

You have to run the VIN to make sure it isn't stolen. That and get a Bill of Sale. That's the best you can do without a title.

Everything on the bike says 79 special however someone has put standard front forks on it.

                Standard front end?

Here's another Pix. I am very curious how you can tell this has a standard front fork? Yet the gauges are round? How do you tell the between the two?
                Thanks

The axle is at the bottom of the forks rather than in front.

To what advantage (if any) to change the forks to Standard ones?

I will think about this one. Maybe I should open up a Yamaha Dealership - XS1100s only?

None. Handling might scary unless the standard triple trees are fitted as well. Standard forks allow for XS650 brakes. There are lots of good options for XS650 brakes.

Are there differences in rake/trail numbers between Standards and Specials?

No. That answer changes if you mix standard/Special forks and triple trees.
