Could not get the link to work. Appears to be broken. May want to verify it or post some pictures here. Anyone who is interested will want to see pictures.

Very common problem on the XJ not firing is the side stand switch. The XJ has a couple extra circuits that keep the bike from lighting up under certain conditions, such as driving away with the side stand down.

The switch is no longer available from Yamaha. You have two options, both work. Easiest way is to follow the wiring up from the switch to a 3-wire connecteor just behind the fuel tank. Unplug the wiring at this point. Make up a 3-way connector (I used 1/4 inch push-on spade connectors) and attach this 3-way to the bike side connections. Every wire is conected to every wire this way. NOTE: This defeats the safety feature of the side stand switch. The bike will think the side stand is always up. Do this mod at your own risk.

Second way is to remove the switch, very carefully cut it open (end where wires come out) clean switch, epoxy it back together and reinstall. This may be more work but retains the side-stand down safety feature.

I would try the first option before I pay for a used black box. Many an XJ have been parted out "not running" because the side stand switch is bad.

Another part of this circuit is a switch in the clutch lever assembly. If this cable/switch is bad it can have a similar effect. I replaced mine several years ago, still available from Yamaha then, but just removing the cable and jumping the two wires together seems to do the job. I had done this before I ordered the correct cable and fixit it the right way.

These two items are uinque to the XJ by the way. Every XJ owner should be aware of this weak point. It can show up as an intermittent problem, bike cuts out or sometimes refuses to start but will start later. Eventually the bike won't start at all.

Dirt and crud builds up at the plunger end of the switch causing lack of contact. There is very little room for error in this switch; the plunger has to be right at the end of it's travel to make the proper contacts. Some times pulling on the plunger with a needle-nose pliers willl get it to seat enough to let the bike fire up.
