  • 1981 XS1100 Special for sale - $1400 (North Platte, NE)

I picked up this bike late spring, got it running well, and the wife and four boys decided a new camper would be a more family-friendly activity for the time being. OEM Yamaha fairing (broken, w/o windshield), and full hard saddlebags with frame/mounts included (though not currently mounted on bike). Runs great, tires have good amount of tread left, rebuilt carbs, new petcocks, upgraded fuse block, new headlight and turn signals, removed octy (but have it in a box if you want it), running nice and smooth right now.

        Hi Mark,
Good start. Looks like a complete bike. Interesting paint scheme on the tank. Wheel it outside with just grass or some other plane background if you want more of a "selling" picture. but those certainly give a good idea of what is being offered.
        Good luck

Good link to the pics. It is in pretty intact condition. Something happened to the front end at some point. its missing the fork cover, and the headlight bucket and brackets are aftermarket stuff, functional for sure, and does not look bad. Bars are aftermarket, but then the "rototiller" bars are typically the first thing to get scrapped on the specials anyway.

Paint on the tank is not my style, but surely could be some one else's. I wonder why they did not paint the side covers to match though. At least the same silver color.

But it is intact and otherwise stock from what I see, exhaust looks to be in good shape. So overall a nice bike.

            Added More Pics

Hey guys - thanks for the great feedback so far! Sorry it took me a little while, but I just got a bunch more pics added to my album. They are still not ideal, but should give a potential buyer a good idea of what I've got.

So when I got the bike, there were no side covers, and the entire carb assembly and air intake was in a separate box. It has definitely been down, but as far as I could tell, it looked more like a low-speed drop than anything more serious. The fairing was missing the windshield, and has a large crack on the left side. I removed it completely, though it does seem repairable to someone with more fiberglass repair knowledge than myself. The outside left exhaust has marks from where it was down, but it is intact and appears pretty decent. The left engine guard was gone, but the right engine guard is included.

It has the OEM rear boxes, luggage rack, and pillion seat rest. I pretty much stripped all of the accessories off so that I could get the mechanicals going (seemed better to have a good running bike first!). I rebuilt the carb bank, rebuilt the petcocks, cleaned out the tank, stuck new petcock filters in, removed the octy and added inline filters, changed the oil, brake fluids, gear oil, threw a new battery in it, got an aftermarket headlight and turn signals, changed the bulbs, added the blade-type fuse box from TopCat, swapped out the OEM bars for a little flatter style (I have a hard time when my hands touch my knees on turns), and cleaned it all up.

It has been running great, and starts the first time, every time, now. I have been adding StaBil to the last few tanks, and ran SeaFoam through it in the gas (definitely helped as the idle and rpm's are much smoother and stable now). All of the cylinders were spot on for compression (pretty amazing to me!). I haven't maxed it out speed wise yet, but it still had a good amount of torque when I got it to ninety on a nearby stretch of road...

I picked up a set of side covers off eBay (hence the color difference), and even have silver paint to make those match the tank (and got all new rubber gaskets to make those stay on - obviously some previous owner neglected to keep the rubber pieces cleaned and lubed). I figured I would repaint the tank, side covers, and saddle bags to match eventually, but the idea of getting a camper and enjoying a little more family time together is winning for expenses in the "fun" category in Quicken - it is hard to fit four boys on this bike with me...
