Well, it does have the optional double bucket seat that was offered by Yamaha accessories back then for the Standard and Specials. Looks to be either an 80 or 81 Special if the rider pegs are original. That Pacifico faring and side cases were added to what is normally a naked bike.

I definitely agree either an 80 or 81 special with the pacifico fairing.
I think the only way to determine 80 vs. 81 is a pic of the side cover. (81's had the 'nike' checkmark and a circle on the clutch/timing covers)
Wonder how they think it's an 83 though?

Here's a pic for those who don't open the link:

It is an 81. Look at the foot peg bracket, they also have a black outline in the indent on the 81 models.

I see it now on the 4th pic. Yep, so there are 3 distinct items to tell the difference between a SG and a SH, Side cover 'swoosh', alternator/timing cover 'circle' and the footpeg mount has black outline. All 3 the 81 has that the 80 doesn't.

Of course the VIN is the biggest indicator, but sometimes all we have is pics.

I love disecting these CL ads!

Some states title a vehicle the year it was sold. There have been a couple threads on how a bike's year gets on a title even though the model year is different. Most likely the bike was sold or first titled in '83.
