  • 1979 XS11 Special $1500 - East TN

I hate to sell it but I just don't have time to make the bike REALLY nice so I figure I'll sell it instead of never fixing it up. I traded for this bike back in June and was told it was a lot nicer than it was. The guy claimed it was a $3000-3500 bike while I didn't believe that, I thought it was a good $2500 bike with few problems. In reality it had tons of minor things... it ran but just not well.

I have replaced the clutch springs (clutch was slipping at high loads), battery (Just this week), air filter, oil filter/fluid, put a new baffle in the muffler (A MAC 4-1), did the pickup coil wire fix, cleaned carbs with 140 mains and new plastic floats, and new plugs and new wires in the stock coils.

After doing all this the bike runs pretty good from 2000RPM and up, REALLY GOOD, but when pulling out or when revving it from a stop it has a roughness to it... it's not so bad that the bike will die or start back firing but it makes you have to rev the throttle a little more before starting to let out on the clutch or it'll bog. But when it hits 2000rpm it smoothes out and launches like a rocket all the way to redline. I think it needs some more tuning and minor work. I cleaned the carbs but when I put the new plastic floats in I just eyeballed them around 25.5mm and put the lids on. When I first got the bike it barely ran so I was just trying to get it decent then I was planning on going back and ironing out the rough spots but I just don't think I have time. With a 5 month old daughter and working 1.5 jobs I just can't do it.. I don't have a garage either so nothing will get done this winter.

The brakes seem ok and the front tire is new -- back is worn but could make it to next season. The seat material is OK but the pan is rusted but it works for now. I have a set of clubman type handlebars on it now but the stock style comes with it. I also have a set of saddlebags that will be included. The tank had some rust in it so I got rid of the octi and put fuel filters on to make sure the carbs didn't get stopped up again. The paint is in ok shape from a few feet away but the tank has 2 small dents with chips. Right now the tach doesn't work but I think it's just the wiring and am going to start checking it this week. I already tested the alternator/stator and everything seems ok so it has to be the wiring or the tach itself.

I'm asking $1500 on the forum (started at $1750 on local CL) and I have a clear title in hand. I think this bike is close to running great and then it'd just need some cosmetic work but I wish I had the time to finish it. The bike is a 79 but has an 80 motor.. I didn't realize it until after I traded so I don't know much about it except it has the 79 carbs on it. Odometer reads 40,000 miles but it doesn't really matter since anymore.

I'm in Oneida, TN, which is near the KY/TN line in East TN. I'm an hour north of Knoxville, 3 hours north of Chattanooga, and 3 hours East of Nashville. I have rode this bike all over town and it runs fine except for the hesitation when pulling out from a stop -- just got back from a nice 45 min ride at sunset and if i never stopped anywhere I'd think it ran great. Can get more pics... some of them are the pics from the previous owner because it shows what the bike looks like with the stock bars and bags but was before I repainted the exhaust.
