On an 81 you will also need the parts from inside the transmission and will need to split the cases to install the kick start. 80's still had the internal gear in the transmission, and just needed the parts in the clutch pack chamber installed, but 81's need the parts that require splitting the cases. My original 80 engine has/had the internal parts, but my 81H engine doesn't.

I did not know the internals on an '80 were different from '81 as I understood it, 80-81 were the same with no kickstarter parts installed. Just '78 and '79 did.
I thought all I needed were all the parts on this schematic. If not what else?

1980 Engines have some of those parts already in them, just the parts that can be installed by removing the clutch cover and clutch pack are not there. But the 1981's don't have ANY of them, and some of the parts require splitting the cases to install them, as they are in the transmission side of the engine. There is also a theory that 1st gear tends to go a little faster on the 81's then the earlier models because of this as some believe this removes some of the support from 1st gear. I don't know if this is true or not, but it has been theorized. Also there are some who are said to have been able to install/remove those other parts without splitting the cases, but it required pulling the transmission countershaft, and there is debate on if it can always be done or only sometimes.
