  • XJ1100 for Sale!!!

Sadly, I have to part with my 1982 Yamaha XJ1100 Maxim and will have to forgo my membership to the XJ community. This has been a great bike for me! I'm staying old school and just bought an 89 FJ1200. The bike as of 6/30/11 has 33,363 miles on it.

This bike run great! I bought the bike last year in June and am the third owner. It had 18,271 miles at the time of purchase. To date, I've put over 15,000 miles on it, mostly on longer trips. This isn't a grocery getter for me. Like I mentioned earlier, I like to get it out and let it run.

Cosmetically, it's in really nice shape for a bike that is almost 30 years old. The original Yamaha fairing is in very nice shape and there is only about an inch long segment of the black edging on the right side that has frayed. I've kept it in check with some electrical tape. There are no dents or major scratches in the tank. Paint is flaking off some of the engine parts. The only painting I did to the bike was to spruce up the black around the cylinder walls and to paint the battery cage to prevent corrosion. Other than that, the bike is just like it's always been. All components of the dash are functioning. There's a little bluing at the manifold but I've noticed no change in the time I've had the bike. And while it's not in the box on the right side of the bike, I do have the original Yamaha bike lock that came with the bike. I installed a GPS holder. I'll leave the ball on if you like but the holder and post will stay with me.

Maintenance items of note. . . All major maintenance has been taken care of by a local guy who specializes in old bikes. Had the carbs cleaned last year and new clutch plates and springs replaced this year. All oil changes have been made between 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Intake boots and seals and petcock valves were replaced last year at 24,091 miles. EBC Front and rear brake pads were installed this spring at 31,135 miles. New Bridgestone Spitfire tires were installed by local Yamaha shop this year. The front was done at 30,750 miles and the back was at 31,937 miles. I installed new Hot Grips heated hand grips with HeatTroller adjustable temp controller this spring. I also installed a terminal block under the tank that has five available posts for electrical accessories. The terminal block is controlled by a relay tied to the ignition so you don't have to worry about wearing the battery down. The fuse connections of the original fuse box deteriorated last year and I installed a new generic fuse block.

The only item of note is that there is a very small leak coming from the left cylinder head. It has to be very, very fine because it is barely noticeable. From what I understand, the original owner had put some heat resistant 'goop' on the fins and I haven't touched it. After a long ride, you'll have a small amount of oil streaked down the left pipe. It hasn't increased since I've owned the bike.

I'm including 5 ea. -- EMGO oil filters I used for standard oil changes and 1 ea. -- Yamaha oil filter I used for oil changes before long trips. This is a great, reliable and fun bike to ride and you won't be disappointed.

I have it listed on eBay and Craigslist....

Do. you have some pics of the small leak around the cylinder? Wondering if it is from the valve.cover or the actual head gasket.

Hey nate, are you just curious or are you kicking tires with that question? I doubt a head gasket can leak oil . As stated lately there is no pressured oil passage in the head gasket, just drain down thru the cam chain cavity so this issue should be a simple fix.

I know that the shouldnt be oil coming from the head gasket (but there are situations where it could happen) and it is most likely from the valve cover. I am kicking tires for a buddy who is looking for a bike who lives near the seller.

I'd come pretty close to saying there CAN'T be an oil leak from the head gasket unless it's already FUBAR. More likely it's the cam chain adjuster of the cam cover that's leaking, both of those are often thought to be the head gasket leaking especially when riding, the adjuster in particular because the oil gets blown back onto the engine by the wind as you ride. The cam chain adjuster will even sometimes appear to be a leak on the back of the head, so I would suspect the cam cover or adjuster as the most likely cause of the oil leak (not for sure, there are other places, and I would need to see at least photo's of the bike and the areas in question to really have much of a REAL idea.)

This is really a really nice bike...one correction though...That fairing isnt from yamaha and its not original equipment either. A previous owner had to have installed it. Otherwise its a fine ride and i like the color too.

Not so. This was offered in 82 and 83 as a dealer install used on the XJ11 and virago and apparently some smaller XJ models. Check these pics.

                    And check this out.

                    General Fairing Musings
After years of searching, I have finally found a frame-mount (f-m) fairing for the Magna. If you've ever listened to my ramblings before, then you know I was getting desperate. The only f-m fairings that seemed like they wouldn't be totally hideous on the Magna were the Yamaha X-1 (for the Virago/ Maxim circa 1982) and the Pichler Universal Uni-4 (German, Whereabouts unknown).
When I asked local Yahama dealers about the X-1, they claimed no knowledge of such a thing. Even when I showed them pictures from old magazines, their memory banks were frozen.

I don't care if you drive down the price of our bikes most of them aren't for sale, but as a fellow XS'er I think you are not getting a high enough price for YOURS!
