  • Selling the Special (1979)

I'm making room in the stable. I bobbed this bike into a solo, and the wife tells me she wants to ride. Paradoxically, she also says I can have only one bike. "Touche," I said.

It's a 1979 Yamaha XS1100S, clean title, I've had it about 5 or 6 years. Its been a great bike. It was a four speed when i bought it, the shifter mechanism had malfunctioned. I replaced the shift dowel and couple other bend pieces under the cover and had 5 gears again. Been great since.

I went through the entire electrical system about 5 years ago, cleaning and lubing all contacts with dielectric grease; I also reworked the fuse box with new style fuses. Brake MCs and all three calipers were rebuilt then as well.

I refurbished the carbs with new jetting to accompany the uni filters and aftermarket exhaust (Jardine I think, not sure of the brand, were on it when i got it). I clean the carbs every year or so, whether they need it or not. The gas tank is clean on the inside, perfect even. No rust. Dented a little bit, though.

It has shorter, more cafe style bars on it. The headlight relay went south a while back, so I wired a manual switch instead (the red switch beside the ignition cylinder).

New fork seals about two years ago. New tires front and back, though the front has an air leak. Haven't found where it is leaking, though. I believe the valve stem is not sealing, however.

Battery 3 years old, charges well. Its on a tender through the winter.

The one side cover was lost and replaced with a roughed up one. Its now sanded and ready for paint.

Bobbed the rear end about 2.5 years ago. Its still a work in progress, though completely rideable/legal right now. Custom made seat constructed from the stock seat pan and foam. Far more comfortable to sit on than the first one I made.

The rear lights are functional and bright, thanks to LED bulbs. Wired with a control unit for trailer towing, making them both brake lights and turn signals. The bulb housings are, admittedly, cheesy. They were intended to get me by until I found a style/design I loved, which I haven't found yet. The rear fender should also be considered in this light. Its of an old CB, was an eBay cheapy, and it was meant to be more for test fitting. Again, I haven't find a style fender that I really like yet.

Regular fluid and oil filter changes with this old girl. It is due for an oil change now though. I have a new filter to go with it. On that note, I have a box full of parts to go with the bike, spare switches, levers, carb parts, etc. I also have the portion of the frame I cut off if one felt inclined enough to weld them back on and set it back to stock (you would need at least a new seat, fender, and grab bar to do this, however).

47,367 on the clock. I've only put about 8 grand on it in the 6 years I've had it.

With all that considered, I'm asking $1200 obo. PM for more info or if you just want to talk about the bike. You can also reach me at cbennett4041@hotmail.com. I'm located in Dexter, MO.

I just reviewed the pictures. That thing is dirty. I should have washed it first. She looks better without sawdust all over her.

I also forgot to mention that I have the front fender to go with the bike. I usually run it in the winter, but I haven't but it on yet. Its in real good shape.

    More pictures available upon request.
