I only managed to put about 500 miles on this bike last year, and 100 of that was because I moved
I hate to sell this bike, and may still change my mind, but thought I'd put it up on here and see if anyone is interested. I can put up pics and more info over the next couple weeks.
I bought this bike almost 3 years ago. I replaced the tires and carb/intake boots last year, and rebuilt the petcocks and fuel delivery diaphragm. The bike only has about 16000 miles on it and runs GREAT (just started it a couple weeks ago to be sure, fired right up!). Unfortunately, when I pulled the wheels off to get the tires mounted, this seems to have done in one of the fork seals, or at least that's when one of them started leaking, and the brakes (while they do still WORK) just aren't the same (hydraulics are fine, but perhaps the pads need a little "wearing in" to a new position on the rotors? I planned to just throw some new pads on it, but haven't gotten around to it). But I admit, most of the riding I DID do last year was done in this condition and the bike still rode pretty well overall. The bike has a windshield that has seen better days, but I left it on (even though I picked up what I BELIEVE to be the necessary parts to remove it - "stalks" for the repositioned front signals). The seat has been recovered. I replaced the fuseblock when I bought it (the old one fell apart when I got the bike home, so I soldered the wires into a universal fuse block that still fits under the stock cover - no wiring problems since!). The wire broke off of the sensor for the battery, so I went about the procedure to remove this and "fool" the computer so the light wouldn't flash. The bike has aftermarket chrome pipes on it, good looking and just a little noisy . The previous owner told me he had the carbs gone through, aside from tweaking the idle speed a little I haven't had to mess with them at all.
As for cosmetic condition, the bike is the factory "maroon" color and is in decent shape for a 27 year old bike. A few scrapes and scratches, one healthy dent in the tank (looks like a golf ball or baseball size...). Definitely not showroom but with some polishing, it's a great rider. Includes leather saddlebags.
I'm selling the bike because, as I said, it's simply not seeing the miles it deserves due to my current living/work situation and now I'm looking into moving a good distance and it would probably be simpler to just sell it and see how bad I miss it when I get settled somewhere else , not to mention that I could use the cash. The bike comes with owners manual, service manual, and an extra tank and side covers (with emblems removed/filled, all painted BRIGHT yellow, the tank sadly got dented in storage before I got ahold of it ).
I was going to just put it on Ebay, but thought I'd put the word out here for a couple weeks first. NADA lists an "antique" '82 XJ at $1450 in excellent condition, but I've got just over $2000 in it and remember feeling I paid a pretty fair price when I got it on Ebay for around $1800. I have no set price in mind, any reasonable offers will be considered.
FWIW, I wouldn't be too scared to just hop on this bike and ride it anywhere as-is, but one fork seal DOES leak and the front suspension does not hold pressure. The "brake issue" might just be a figment of my imagination, after all I haven't ridden this thing since last Fall and that wasn't much. Believe it or not, this was my first bike, and I have a feeling I was spoiled a little by it.
If anyone is interested, please PM me with any questions, as I said I'll try to get some pictures together over the next week or two.
