I picked up an 8? 850, the vin starts with 3H5, the guy said it was bored out to an 1100 awhile back, it's complete, hasn't run in years, what parts can I take from it for my 79 xs11? It's an XS850 Looks like the air box will fit? unfortunately the guages won't, I'm going to take what I can use, and the rest will be available

850 is three cylinder (three carbs) 1100 is four cylinder. So, your 850 has 3 carbs, 3 exhaust, and very few parts will interchange. If it was modified with an XS1100 four cylinder engine, that is a whole new ball game. I am wondering if an 850 could be bored out to 1100 cc's. Rather large overbore, as there are only 3 cyls to boreput something smooooth betwen your legs, XS eleven

an1100 in 850 clothing!?
The 3H5 VIN IS the 80SG 1100!! IF the engine vin matches the frame VIN, then you've got an 1100, and it's probably got 4 cylinders!
The 850 has 72.5 bore, bored to 74.00 only gets you 885ccs. The 850 is really only an 826cc! The 850 can't be bored to an 1100 with the stock jugs!!!
The 80 850's vin should be 3J3 !

Some but not much
Some of the electrics and switches will swap over, and the front wheel, fender, turn signals. handelbars, headlight bucket, ring, and mounting ears. The calipers and M/C's will swap, but the rotors will not. They are a smaller diameter on the 850. The front forks are smaller on the 850 also, I believe. The final drive can be swapped, but a few modifications are needed, but it is very easy to do. Fuel tanks looks like it will, but it doesn't have the indentations in the lower seam to clear the valve cover.
TC the 80SG is a 3J6 serial number. I think the 3H5 is an 80G.

Ok, mea culpa, etc, now that I dug it out of his shed, it's an xs1100, in my defense, when I first saw it, it'd been advertised as a Kaw 900, and when I called, the guy told me it was sold, and the buyer was driving from long beach to van nuys to pick it up... he called me an hour later, told me it was a Yamaha, and the guy from LB didn't buy it... imagine how ticked he was. I went over, and it was under some stuff, I could see it was a 4 cylinder yamaha, looked like an 1100, and what the hell do I know about an 850 anyway? But, it had an engine, tires, gas tank, seat, switches, lights, and all that, and it was cheap, I was in a hurry, paid him, got the paperwork, and just went back and picked it up. The side covers do say XS850, but when I looked close, they're just some letters they glued to the covers. The frame says it was built in 6/79, and yeah, it's complete, 37,000 miles, it was laid down on the left side, the tank's dented up some, and the cover is broken off, apparently the previous owner, (who gave it to the guy I got it from), had it rebuilt back in the late 80s, dropped it, and it scared the hell outta him. So now I'm tempted to make it run too. Everything on it's bone stock. Last time it was registered was 89 or 90. I was going to take off the bar switches and the airbox for my xs1100s, but now that I see it's all there, I hate to part it out, so if someone has some good switches, and pieces for a 79 Special, maybe we can work out a trade. I haven't tried turning it over yet, it's soaking in tranny fluid right now, and I have to change the oil. However, the lockhart oil cooler IS going on my bike.Randy

I was also going to write about how the PO might have lost the side covers and found some 850's to put on there, but thought that was a stretch! Sounds more like the guy was making a SLEEPER!!
Rolls up next to a Kaw1000, "It's only an 850, but, sure, I'll race ya! What do you say $50.00 just to make it sporting?"

Yeah, that's what a friend of mine said, "detuning the side covers" he called it, was apparently an old street racing trick, go figure.
Anyway, I hate to take this apart, and the left bar switch connectors are different anyway. So, here's the deal, if someone has the following items for a '79 Special;
L/H & R/H bar switches
Working Speedo
Rubber gasket for the tach housing
Stock Air Cleaner, preferably with a reusable filter
And is willing to trade those and make on offer on this, we can 'make a deal', as they say
The good:
95% Complete 79 xs1100 standard
Side covers are there, but have XS850 emblems on them
The Bad:
I'm taking the lockhart oil cooler off it, and since I don't have time right now to clean it and replace the orings etc, it won't have an oil filter bolt.
It's been dropped, the left side of the tank is dented, and the L/H tank emblem is broken, the R/h Side one is fair
The pickup cover on the L/H side of the motor is broken off, some of the mounting surface on the engine is broken also, but looks repairable
Turn signals are broken, there's one good lens on the front.
Hasn't run in god knows how long, last registered in (apparently) 1990
No title, bill of sale from previous owner, it's out of the DMV system, so it'll have to go thru a CHP verification.
I have a guy who'll buy if and part it out, but I really hate to see that happen to a potentially restorable XS.
