The whole housing will end up FUBAR'ed trying to do that. Just replace the whole speedo unit with a working one.

I would but it's a 160mph speedo and I already have the housing apart for it I had to take it apart because part of the trip reset lever got stuck in the mechanism. Everything works now just need a needle to reassemble.

Those needles are common to a lot of Asian speedometers. Look at the needle on a scooter next you see one and compare it yours. A dead scooter speedo could be had for little or nothing, and cannibalized for the needle. Be aware that your needle has a counter weight on it, and a replacement may not have that.
You might try a speedometer repair shop, if you can find one.
A flat wooden tooth pick painted day glow red and glued on to what's left of your needle might be an alternative.

My '79 Special speedometer just went tango uniform. It's the second one for this bike. The things appear to be pretty much junk from the get-go. I've been searching for a replacement and I found an OEM NOS 160 mph XS speedometer for $549. Not in this lifetime! Most of what's on eBay is junk. I don't care if it's 85, 120, 140, or 160 mph, it's mostly junk and it's all expensive for something that may break before the snow flies again.

What to do? I like the look of my SG as originally designed. Is there an aftermarket clock that will fit in the chrome can? These quality aftermarket gauges can cost hundreds of dollars. I hope they're better than the OEM junk.

I need to go investigate these folks: Joel Levine Co.

Maybe re-manufactured is better than new. I've heard the process is expensive. Perhaps I should allow them to make their case.

Another one bites the dust! I'm going to keep it in case I find the need or desire to have it rebuilt. The original unit went tango uniform at about the same odometer reading.

As luck would have it, I found a very nice 140 mph speedo in my stash while looking for a brake rotor for my XS650. I have no idea where or how I acquired it. As these things go, it should take my bike to 125,000 miles before it breaks.

I would like to know this as well. Hate having to figure out how fast I am going, 10 fast right now, the Harley is 5 fast. I need a good dependable speedo.

Tim a GPS will tell how fast you are going. Also will indicate where it thinks you are and how to get where it has decided you are going, which is not always where you want to go Will also get you home by some circuitous route of it's choosing
The speed indication is quite accurate compared to speedo.

What's the status on your search? As I was visiting the Dragon Lady in the unit last weekend, I re-discovered a cluster in my "parts". The lens is shattered, but if you still have a need, I will see about the condition of the needle.
"Venturered" 80 XS1100G - "DoraMax" getting sort of resto/destro ed.

Yeah it's a pretty blue, but just because you're old is no excuse to buy a bagger. Fortunately I have wrenches.

I found this in my parts stash. I have no clue where or when I got it. It looks OK, but the needle is extremely sluggish. It's better than a completely broken one. I'll have to live with it.
