  • Hunting for XS in CA

    Hello again XSives,

I'm Interested in 750s or 1100s for any year.

I'm back in the market for a motorcycle after five years of withdrawal. Originally I had a 79 XS1100S which ended up a loss. At the time it broke down and I could not work on it nor trailer around a non-functioning bike between moves after I graduated college. Now that my situation is more stable and I have a place for a bike I have been unimpressed with the styles I find in newer models. I have been taken in by this older styled bike and want to pick up another to get back into riding.

Please let me know of anything out there I should know about. I am fairly handy at wrenching, my last bike got a clutch replacement and some significant electrical diagnostics and replacements. What I don't know now I am happy to learn. So while I am not planning on picking up a full rebuild project I would be interested in smaller jobs to have something on the road this summer.

Currently I'm scouring craigslist and seeing lots of people wanting 1.5k+ for bikes with significant issues and/or chopped up. Hoping to ferret out some other options via better channels.

Glad to have riding on the horizon again and to know this community is still here.

Shoutout to Planedick who helped me out a bunch with my XS back in 2007.

    Cheers,
    Allen

Keep in mind those are asking prices, many sellers will 'see the light' if they don't sell...

Wth that said, it's sometimes better IMO to buy a all-there, all-stock neglected non-runner at a much lower price rather than a running 'needs TLC' bike that you'll end up doing pretty much the same work to. I'd avoid the chopped-up bikes like the plague, as few owners get any mods 'right' (or they wouldn't be selling them) unless that's really the 'look' you want. These bikes aren't that complicated to work on as long as you don't have major engine issues.
Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

'78E original owner - resto project
    '78E ???? owner - Modder project FJ forks, 4-piston calipers F/R, 160/80-16 rear tire
    '82 XJ rebuild project
    '80SG restified, red SOLD
    '79F parts...
    '81H more parts...

    Other current bikes:
    '93 XL1200 Anniversary Sportster 85RWHP
    '86 XL883/1200 Chopper
    '82 XL1000 w/1450cc Buell, Baker 6-speed, in-progress project
Cage: '13 Mustang GT/CS with a few 'custom' touches
    Yep, can't leave nuthin' alone...

Thanks. I have been keeping tabs on the phone numbers and contacts. Now that I've seen them repost a few times I'll get in touch and see how set they are on their price.

I saw one recently that might actually justify a higher price(though not the $2500 I think), but I'm hoping to find an XS owner in the area who can tell me just how "stock" and "good" running it actually is.
