  • Side Covers for E

I need a couple decent side covers for this 78 E. The ones I have are pretty busted up. Paint doesn't matter.

    Will these fit

Part of my learning process was buying side covers that didn't fit my model year. I ended up with these two (one right and one left) that don't fit my 80 special.

I think I paid around $40 for the left and around $20 for the right The left has had the emblem mounting holes filled, the right is pretty much unmolested.

send me a message if you want them...

I don't know why those won't fit your SG. That is what those in the pics appear to be.

      Standard covers are different.

The serial number is 3H5-004886 which says the bike's a XS1100G. I suppose that makes it a standard, not a special, however when I got the bike it was wrecked and had a special tank on it which is what I ended up putting back on it, along with whatever other XS1100 parts I could come up with to get it running again. Unfortunately I didn't realize that there were little nuances like this until the last few months when I was getting everything together for the final push.

Here's the right side cover that I found that's currently on the bike, the top has slots in it instead of round holes.

Here's the left side cover, it's slightly taller than the "spare" one I've got, I just lucked out when I got the second cover, because I hadn't realized the size difference yet:

PS: mentally I've still been thinking of it as a special

PS: mentally I've still been thinking of it as a special even though I've known it was an 1100G for awhile now. I'll have to start thinking of it as a standard from now on...

              Hey Greg.
Have you tried the baking soda and superglue fix on the ones you have yet? I do not have any before pics but I have some of the repaired ones that I have here. They are pretty dear to me because I have 2 78E's and if I loose or break one then I would be mad I sold them.
Point is that while you may find some that work, in the meantime you may as well try to fix yours. Mine had a 4 inch by 1/2 inch piece missing. The BS/SG fix worked pretty good. That stuff hardens enough to use your bench grinder to take off the first few layers until you can power sand off the rest until you need to hand sand the finished product.
The left side one I bought from Andreas for 40 bucks with the repair in the pics on it done before I got it. I used the BS?SG fix to mold it into a better looking end product.
So I will post up the pics I have of the repairs on the ones I have so you can see what can be done. I do have the ones in the pictures here and they have not moved off the shelf since the photos were taken. Open to offers if they interest you.

              Now they look like this!

              Lock tab

Just something to think about and for about ten bucks worth of glue and baking soda it may work for what you need.

Couple of more parts bikes of which 2 more will live!

Actually yes, I have THOUGHT about it.

I just figured I would see if I can find a decent set first. I'm kinda lazy when it comes to that kind of stuff.

Been kicking myself in the butt because I had a set from an F that were almost perfect and they had perfect badges on them. You can see them on Bigfoot's F now. I GAVE them to him because I didn't need them at the time and he was doing his build. My garage was even a bigger mess then than it is now.

Harry is a good friend and he needed them so no regrets. He's bailed me out a time or 2. I just wish I had them now.

That's probably what I'll end up doing.
