  • Rear Bag Guards for Special

I am wanting to add rear Yamaha bags to my 79SF. I am having trouble locating the correct guards that mount to the top of the shocks and rear passenger pegs. They are not the same as a Standard and are around an inch shorter CL to CL on the mounting holes. I will get the exact measurement at lunch time and update this post.
Willing to pay fair price based on the condition of the guards.

I had no trouble mounting some from a Standard (Venturer) on my 80 Special. Maybe the 79 is different?

CL to CL on the mounting points is 11.5 on the 79 Special compared to 13 on my Standard. Are the 2 muffler/peg bracket mounting points on the 80-81 Specials the same as a 79? I measured roughly 6 7/8 on the 79SF. 7 1/4 on the Standard. I need to see if I have a 80-81 bracket in my mountain of parts.

Figured out the obvious difference. The Special pipes are swept up therefore so is the bracket. if you look at the rear bracket to frame mount on a Standard it is below the middle of the swingarm cover. On a Special it is middle or higher.
XS750 or 850 guards work maybe?

Cept for the Venturer that have the upswept brackets AND exhaust same as the 81 Special.

Well there is the answer. Yamaha finally got smart and said why make two different peg mounts? Thanks Brant.

I was able to come up with a set of rear guards that work on the special, just took more digging through what I had. I believe they may have come from a Venturer since they were attached to the later hinged plastic bags.
