  • Speedo cable nut

    Strange request, but I seem to have lost the nut that holds the speedo cable to the speedo. If someone has one please let me know how much, and if u could drop it in an envelope to 83651 zip code...? Thanks and have a great day!

    Uhh, as far as I know, the nut does not come off the cable. Look down there where the cable goes through the rubber bracket on the fender, and see if it slid down there. CZ

      Hmm... I've looked up and down, even pulled the top of the cable out from between the headlight ears, and traced it down to the speedo drive, and that stupid nut is nowhere to be found. Guess I'm gonna need a whole new cable. Ugh...

        Now here is a mystery.
        How long have you had the bike?
        Who disconnected the top end of the speedo cable?
        How long ago did it get disconnected?
        Why was it disconnected?
        Have you disconnected the bottom end?
        When you do, look at the arrangement on that end. The top end should be the same. The knurled nut is captive, but can slide along the outer housing.

          I think it may have been like that since I got the bike, some ~6 years ago. And it had been wrecked just previous to that. And I am just now getting the bike to the point of riding it/fixing the last couple items.

            What portion of the bike was wrecked?
            If the speedo cable was kinked at the head, it may well have broken the nut that holds the cable in, since a lot of the nuts appear to be cast pot metal.
            Have you looked at the stem in the head, to see if the threads are clear, or if the thumb nut is broken off and still on the threads?

              Well when I got the bike, the right crash bar was pushed back, stator cover still has a crack, waiting on alumaweld to fix it, the tank has 4 different dents, and the left grip could almost touch the back of the tank with the wheel straight... And there r no pieces of that nut to be found anywhere... So I guess it's time for a new cable.

                Yep, sounds like it got snagged and ripped out of the head. Hope it didn't screw something up inside that piece.
                You might also check the fork tubes for straightness. Sounds like some serious damage.

                  That's the funny thing, the gauges are fine, the cable is intact, and the fork tubes are perfectly straight (at least according to my engineering square) so it has me puzzled. I wonder if my Honda speedo has the same threads on the nut? Cuz I have a snapped cable on my cx500, but the nut is fine... And the xs cable is sound/functional... Just missing the nut... Maybe with some careful crimping and re-flaring I could swap bits, as I need a whole new cable for the CX...

                    It's weird how some things happen in a accident. One time I went down I managed to scrape the tops of the time signals and smashed in the top of a tach but the speedo was fine. Never could figure that out.

                      Yeah and having bought the bike as a wreck, it's like getting a 1000 piece puzzle, that is 3/4 finished, but may or may not be missing 10 pieces entirely, and then add to that, 10 pieces that are there are mangled beyond recognition lol.
